hi was wondering if any body can help me firstly is Rossshire the same as Ross & Cromarty.

if so i have  a David Ross who appears on the 1881 census as being aged 51 in 1881. he was married to Helen (McGregor) can anybody find him on any previous census i would really like to know when he was born and who his parents are, but i have to start by confirming his place of birth via the census.

any help would be much appreciated.

Hi

Yes, Ross-shire is the same as Ross and Cromarty. It stretches from one side of the country to the other. I live on the west side - see  http://scotlandsfamily.com/parish-map-caithness.htm

Could you say where  it says he was born on the 1881 and where he was living. Also, a list of his children's names in birth order might help with finding his birth.

PS there are 84 David Ross birth/baptisms 1828-1832 in Ross & Cromarty on the IGI  Sad

It says he was a masson born in rosshire , on his daughters marraiage it give his place of birth as Elgin in Moray, does that help any?

the 1881 census has him and his family living in wesdie, Forglen,Banffshire
All children born in Bannfshire

wife Helen age 48
Children
Catherine age 27
Margaret age 16
Axlander age 15
Ann age 14
Christine age 11
George age 9
Helen age 3

The 1871 has him born Alness, Rossshire.

On the 1891, it says he is born Alness so I think that seems the location.

Do you know when he died?  His death cert should give his parents' names.

checking the IGI
there only two David ROSS's born in Alness one in 1847 which makes him to young and the other in 1829 wich my money is on. Great thanks once again

David died on 20 May 1910 at North St, Aberchirder,aged 80. Retired Mason, Married to Helen McGreggor. His parents are given as William Ross, millwright (dec) and Catherine, maiden surname Ogg (dec).
