Sussex Interests
« on: Friday 03 December 04 09:33 GMT (UK) »

Hi there,

Is anyone researching BROWN's or TURK's in East Sussex pre 1830's??

Main areas seems to be Burwash, Buxted, Withyham...

Any info would be most welcome!

Thanks

Hi Buttercup,
I have 136 marriage's in the name of Turk from 1553-1836 on the Sussex Marriage Index, mostly in the Rotherfield & Rye area's.  Of course plenty in the name of Brown Grin
If you can give me name's & dates I'll gladly do a look-up,
Jane

Hi Jane, Thanks for your kind offer...

How did i know you'd say there are plenty of Browns ?! Wink

Ok the earliest known people i have are:

Thomas BROWN and his wife Sarah TURK. They married on 25th April 1831 in Withyham.

Thomas had a brother William and he too was also married by 1838 when they came to Australia. (Both families traveled on the same ship). I dont know Williams wife's name.

I know Thomas was born in Burwash in 1806 and Sarah in Buxted, 1811.

I'm more interested in their families ie. who their siblings were etc.
Ive been given a marriage of James BROWN and Mary RUSSELL in whom i believe are Tom's parents. (Names are listed on his death certificate)

The only indication of Sarah's parents is her father Thomas TURK.

I know Brown is a terrible name to research but i thought id give it a go!!
Thanks again for any info given Cheesy

Hi  This looks to be the marriage of Thomas & sarah.

Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Withyham, East Sussex,  Date: 25 Apr 1831:
Subject: Thomas BROWN
Spouse: Sarah TURK, botp

This might be his brother's marriage, but I doubt it as Willaim is from Middlesex.

Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Withyham, East Sussex,  Date: 31 Aug 1823:
Subject: William BROWN, Marylebone MDX.
Spouse: Frances JENKINS, otp

This one is more likely & lucky you, you have the license details!

Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Archdeaconry of Lewes Marriage Licence,  Date: 16 Nov 1825:
Subject: William BROWN, bach 29+ Buxted
Spouse: Sarah HOATH, sp 26+ Withyham

Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Withyham, East Sussex,  Date: 17 Nov 1825:
Subject: William BROWN, Buxted
Spouse: Sarah HOATH, otp (lic)

This is another but unlikely.

Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Withyham, East Sussex,  Date: 11 Oct 1833:
Subject: William BROWN
Spouse: Susanna PARIS, botp

This is your lucky day, James was in the militia, more to look up.

Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Salehurst, East Sussex,  Date: 17 May 1799:
Subject: James BROWN, Sussex Militia
Spouse: Mary RUFSELL, (B)

This might be sarah's parents, there are others (3/4) but this is the only one in Buxted.

Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Buxted, East Sussex,  Date: 13 Jan 1793:
Subject: Thomas TURK
Spouse: Mary PAGE, botp (B)

Hi Buttercup - I expect you have seen www.sussexweald.org.  Lot's of Turks in your area of East Sussex.
Be sure to double check anything you find on there though - it does have some mistakes..
