COOK family look up please
« on: Wednesday 02 May 07 14:34 BST (UK) »

I am researching the COOK family  Charles, John, Thomas and William who all came to Australia before 1861.

Exact date unknown.

They all settled in South Australia.

I am visiting the UK next month from Australia and trying to find out more info.

All I know is they are from Berkshire
Would appreciate a census look up.

They were born around 1830's

Hello Kate,
Cook is a very common name so I think people need a bit more information before they can help you. Berkshire is not a huge county but there are hundreds of villages/hamlets in it, so looking, even in the Berks fhs 1851 transcript, without some more info on where to look is impossible. If your Charles, John, Thomas and William were born 1830's, then by 1851 some of them might already have left home, so finding them together is not likely.  Without parent's names or a place, looking for them in 1841 would be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

I agree.

However, for what it's worth, if you look on the IGI, you will see the following baptisms in Bray,Berkshire all to William & Elizabeth Cook:-

John 22.3.1829
William 21.8.1831
Thomas 12.7.1835
Charles 15.10.1837
James 9 June 1844

It could be pure coincidence that the names fit, but it could be a starting point - perhaps to see if they feature on any censuses before and after 1861 when your Cooks emigrated.

Hello again,
The family that Jill mentions is the one that I was looking at in 1851 but there is no William or  John with them.
Parents William and Elizabeth both born Maidenhead age 52 with children Thomas 16 Charles 13 Elizabeth 10 and James 6, all born Maidenhead, living at Bridge Street, Bray.

Hello all
Thanks for help I think you have found them for me

So
I have done searches before on the IGI
but
I put in Charles Cook
parents William Cook and Elizabeth
no date but birth England
and nothing comes up

Tried it today with John and nothing came up
but

Just now i went  to the IGI and put in birth dates and the names come up!

2. The ages fit
I have Charles Marrying in Australia (SA) 1861 aged 24
William (My ancestor) marrying in SA 1856 aged 25

3 On both William and Charles death certificate which I know you shouldnt trust says born Riding Kent

4 I think William and John came to Australia aboard the Culphurnia in 1849
5 And thats fits with the Census

Well  thank you all after all these years!!!!!!!!!!

I find them 4 weeks before I go to the UK !!!!!!!!

That's great, Kate.

At least now - when you get here - you know what you're looking for and may be able to find out more about this family, and even get further back.

Good luck and enjoy your stay.

Hi Jill
If at all possible are you able to look up the next census after 1851 to see who is still there?

If not thats ok

To all
Here is my web site that I am trying to update with all the new information !

It will be good to now go to Berkshire and take photos in the area they came from
Cheers
Kate

Sorry, Kate - I don't have a subscription to Ancestry but perhaps someone who does might look for you?
