William in 1851 is described as Married -not widower?
and on image it looks like John was 8 (not 2)

I've looked at Phillipa's who were "visitors" in 1851 -not come up with anything.
maybe someone with access to PR's could tell if she was Prout before marriage?

Hi Annie,
This is interesting. I agree young John is definitely 8 in 1851 not 2. The name Chidey doesn't seem to exist.  On further searching I have found what I believe to be the marriage
William CHUDLEIGH = Philippa PROUT 1 Apr 1826 St Teath.
and Philippa's Parents marriage
John PROUT - Phillippa DAVEY Sojourner 25 May 1795 St Teath
I can't see a marriage of any possible parents/grandparents in St Teath. The only marriage I have found which may or may not be something
John CHIDLEY of Trevalga = Joan MEDLAN 26 Jun 1775 Otterham
They are buried in Otterham
John CHUDLEIGH aged 81 13 Oct 1820 Otterham St Dennis
Joan CHUDLEIGH aged 79 5 Feb 1819 Otterham St Dennis
so ages look like grandparents.....Now on further hunting I see these baptisms in Otterham
