A few death notices from the Newcastle Courant, you may find of interest.
Friday 12 June 1840.
At Bedlington on the 29th ult, aged 49, Isabella, wife of Mr Henry Darling, Innkeeper.
Friday 31 July 1863.
At Choppington, on 22nd inst, aged 34, Mr Robert Dixon Darling of this town, son of Mr Henry Darling of Bedlington.
Friday 3 July 1868.
At Bedlington, on the 24th ult, aged 60, Margaret, wife of Mr Henry Darling.
ult means last month, inst means this month.

Hi Claire:
Sorry no Agnus Darling that I am aware of, but I still don't know for certain who Henry Darling's parents were. I know from his marriage certificate that his Father was William Darling a farmer .... but I'm not positive Jane Dixon is the Mum. No one could find a birth record for my Henry. It seems like the right family ...... but
Perhaps someone will be able to come up with a birth record for your Agnus.

I had all of these date ranges from the BMD index, but these details are a real bonus.
Is the Newcastle Courant available on line for searching?
According to BMD Henry died in the 1st QTR 1870 Morpeth
and Isabella Jane Darling (daughter of Robert Dixon Darling) died in the 2nd Qtr 1879, approx 20 years old Newcastle Upon Tyne

A couple of snippets, hopefully to help, not to hinder.
On 27 April 08 you wrote that ... "1841 census for Henry Darling indicated b.Dunston..."
Census 1841 did not record birth places, only county of birth !
In your last posting you mention that according to BMD, Henry died in the 1st Qtr 1870 Morpeth. So his death was registered with the District Registration Office AT Morpeth, but he did not necessarily die IN Morpeth. The DR Office at Morpeth covered a large territory including several towns and villages etc (including Bedlington, Choppington etc)
Embleton lay within the Registration District of Alnwick.

There are lots of threads and links on here about the "free trial" with the Gale website in the States. They have loads of British 19thC newspapers searchable on line, including the Courant. The moderators have removed some of the links as there are question marks as to who is eligible for the free trial, so I'll not add another, but there's still a few on here, try searching "old newspapers".
Can't see any death notices for Henry or Isabella, but a few other relevant articles :

On 29th June 1835, at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, at the house of Mr Henry Darling, Balcony Inn, Bedlington.
All that field containing about 6 acres of rich old Swarth, called the Hall Meadows, situate near the Church Lane, close adjoining to the village of Bedlington, on the South, in the occupation of Richard Wilson, held on lease from the Lord Bishop of Durham, under a ground rent of 18s 5 1/2d, for the term of 21 years, from 25th March 1828, renewablable according the the custom of Ecclesistical Practice.
This property, from the productiveness of the soil, and its contiguity to the populous village of Bedlington, presents an advanatageous investment.
Mr Richard Wilson, builder, of Bedlington, will show the premises, and further particulars may be known on application to Mr. R. Wilson, Blyth Sheds, or Mr. C.W. Errington, Solicitor, Blyth.

Similar article posted on May 21st 1841, with last last line, To Be Entered upon Immediately, instead of 12th next ensuing.
He was also a member of the Bedlington Association for the Prosecution of Felons, which met regularly.

You seem very knowledgeable and a stickler for detail so I went back and checked my census information again.
1841 - you are absolutely correct, no place of birth is shown
The family is living in the Township of Bedlington, in the Village of Bedlington and it indicates that he is not born in this county. There is a no for all family members except the youngest son Thomas, age 7.
1851
They are in the township of Cramlington, Village of Cramlington, and it indicates that Henry was born in Dunstan
1861
They are on Walker Terrace, in the parish of Bedlington, Town of Bedlington, in the Parliamentary Borough of Morpeth, Eccles. District of Durham
It says that Henry is born in Embleton
1871Henry is dead. BMD 1st Qtr 1870 Morpeth District - yes Morpeth is the District, BMD references show only the District, but I presume the actual village was Bedlington.
To the best of my knoweldge Henry was born in Dunstan/Embleton, abt 1797.
He married his 1st wife Isabella Unknown abt 1820 and their 1st 5 children were born in Embleton, Alnwick & Ulgham. Sometime between 1830 and 1834 when their 6th child was born, they had moved to Bedlington.
In the 2nd Qtr on 1840 Morpeth Dist - his wife Isabella died and after waiting a respectable period of time, he married his 2nd wife Margaret Jackson in the 4th Qtr of that same year in Morpeth Dist - the marriage certificate indicates solemnized at Morpeth in the parish of Morpeth in the County of Northumberland
I notice that your last name is Dixon ..... are you any relation to the Jane Dixon that might be Henry's Mother? ?

I started out in hopes of finding a link to the Famous Grace Darling and you haven't advanced that any ..... but you have provided some extremely fasinating stuff.

Jennifer is spot on. The 41 census record is telling us they were not born in the County of Durham (including the main part of the county between Tyne and Tees, and the three "enclaves" listed by Jennifer collectively called "North Durham", that lay within the overall boundary of Northumberland)
The Bedlingtonshire enclave lay between the rivers Wansbeck and Blyth. Places such as Morpeth, Embleton, Cramlington, Cowpen etc, were always in Northumberland.
Stickler I am ( my kids call me Pedantic Mick). But my defence is that I have made oodles of research mistakes that took me up the garden paths and cost me months of time. My most common mess-ups were about places. About using modern-day maps and knowledge about places, when I should have been looking at them in an C19th context. (e.g. Blyth now holds sway over a wide area including Cowpen. But in 1800s fledgling Blyth was a satellite community within the wider Cowpen township)
Although a Dixon and a Northumbrian, my Dixon forebears are from Cumberland (Brampton) who returned there in 1950s after only 20 yrs in Bedlington/Blyth area, leaving my father behind-with my Gallagher mother

Well I think that all sounds right.
Henry Darling and his early kids were born in Dunstan/Embleton/Ulgham Northumberland and Thomas was born in Bedlington, Durham So Thomas is the only one shown as born in that county (meaning Durham at that time
Michael - can you enlighten me a wee bit more about Dunstan? Is it part of Embleton, near Embleton. As I mentioned before, Henry is from Dunstan on one census and Embleton on another. According to his 2nd marriage cert - he is of Bedlington (because that is where he is living at the time of that marriage.
I am thinking of ordering the death certificate for Henry to try and narrow down the birth date and place ...... but I suspect it will only tell me his age and location at the time of death.
I would also like to order a microfilm for the parish registers for Henry's birth - but not sure if Dunstan would be included with Embleton or separate?

The Parish of Embleton in 1800s consisted of nine townships
(this old term "township" is not to be confused with the modern meaning of township)...
Broxfield, Brunton High, Brunton Low, Craster, Falloden, Newton-by-the-Sea, Stamford, Dunston/Dunstan and Embleton itself...
and the two chapelries of Rock and Rennington. (Chapelries were usually satellites of the "mother" parish church, created/built to save shoe leather of worshippers.... some chapelries eventually became independent parishers in their right)
For 1841 the total inhabitants of the entire Parish was 2030 (of which 525 were in the Embleton Township).
Within the township of Dunstan were several wee communities... Dunstan, Dunstan Steeds/Steads, Dunstan Hall, Dunstan Hall, Dunstanfield, Dunstan Square... stop me somebody, ...and others not called Dunstan.
So folk living anywhere within this territory/"township" of Dunstan would have been baptised, married, buried at Parish Church in Embleton Village.
An "address" or land description might have read like this....
Dunstan Stead, community within the
Township of Dunstan, within the
Parish of Embleton, within the
County of Northumberland.
Suggest you delve into web site communities.northumberland.gov.uk .
Go to Embleton section... see the lovely old maps in "Plans" section showing all the Dunstans, and the Ordnance Maps. See the trade directory of 1827 in the Printed Material section.... it includes a Darling farmer.
( There are also sections on Cramlington and Bedlington)

You are right about lack of info on a death cert .
Have you accessed the Embleton Parish records for baptism ?
By the way early census enumerators were instructed to record "place of birth" OR "parish of birth" So you could say that both Dunstan and Embleton are "correct"
If you get any info on the "Balcony Inn" Bedlington, please let me know. I have an interest in Bedlington pubs of old. Never heard of a Balcony Inn.(but there was a Gallery Inn)
