Darling Marriage abt 1827-28
« on: Saturday 05 May 07 02:40 BST (UK) »

Would like to know about the marriage record for
Henry Darling and Margaret ? in 1827-1828 probably.

Their 1st child Robert D was born in 1829.  Most of their children were born in Bedlington, so I'm assuming that is where the marriage may have been

Thanks,

Still Searching,

You assumed that their marriage took place in Bedlington because  "most" of their children were born there.

You mention Robert D as their first child. Are you overlooking the fact that he was born in Embleton, not Bedlington.

Also Census 1841 (295-1-51-11) shows that many of the family were "not born in this county" . Quirky as it may be, Bedlington in 1841 was part County Durham. So it indicates that they were born outside Co Durham, with best bet been Northumberland.

As it happens Robert Dixon Darling was born in Embleton. As was Thomas and William Darling.

Bedlington reverted back to Northumberland in 1844.

www.genuki.org.uk  shows Bedlington parish marriages 1813-1837. A William Darling married Ann Turner 15 June 1817.

To the best of my knoweldge Henry Darling was born
abt 1797, in Embleton, Northumberland.  Margaret ? his wife was born about 1809, in Barmoor, Northumberland.  At some point and some place they marry and in 1841 they are in Bedlington, Durham (which I understand was really Northumberland, but shown as Durham on the 1941 Census.  There is a William living with Henry and Margaret, but he seems to old to be their son, so maybe he's Henry's brother?  He is born in Embleton.  The others are Robert D 12, Jane Isabella 10 and Thomas 7.  I don't know where they are born and by the 1851 Census, they aren't at home anymore.

Baptisms in Embleton up to 1839

Henry Darling  7 Aug 1825 s/o Henry and Isabella
John Bell Darling  25 May 1823 s/o Henry and Isabella
Robert Dixon Darling  5 Oct 1828 s/o Henry and Isabella
William Henry Darling  17 June 1821 s/o Henry and Isabella

Margaret could be a second marriage.  Burials in Embleton do not reflect any of these family members.  There is no marriage in Northumberland for a Henry Darling to an Isabella or a Margaret, nor in Co. Durham 1813-1837.

There is one burial that you should probably keep a note on for the future:
Henry Darling, age 81, died Berwick and buried Embleton 15 Sept 1835.

WOW .... so now I'm totally confused.

In 1851 my family for sure is in Cramlington, Northumberland
H0107/2412 ED7c folio 567 pg 8 - this is when my gr grand James Darling appears on the scene and all children are different.

William H and Thomas from 1841 Census are in Cowpen, Northumberland at an Inn H0107/2412 ed 2c household 35 - don't know where Robert D and Jane Isa are?

In 1861 my family is at Walker Terrace, Bedlington, Northumberland
RG9/3872 ED4 folio 86 pg 30

Free BMD  Jun QTR 1868 Margaret Darling death - age 60 Morpeth
Mar QTR 1870 Henry Darling death - age 74 Morpeth

I have the marriage certificate for James & wife Hannah, guess I will have to get his birth cert  Jun QTR 1848 Morpeth - to see his mother Margaret's maiden name.  This still will not tell me if father Henry was previously married.

still searching,

In 1841,  Bedlington, County Durham,  was really Bedlington, County Durham. It is just incorrect to say it "was really Northumberland".

Bedlington, like the other enclaves of County Durham, that lay within the borders of Northumberland (Islandshire and Norhamshire) were "in", owned and administered by, County Durham.

Bedlington was shown as part of Co Durham on the 1841 census, because it was part of Co Durham.

The above three enclaves were even called "North Durham" at the time.

They were "in" Co Durham not just for census purposes, but also for admin, ecclesiastic, civil registrations etc. (Bedlington is in the Domesday Book, under Co Durham)

Then from 1844, the link to Co Durham was severed and the three "shires" were deemed to be Northumberland in all senses.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The Cross Tavern in Bedlington (C1871) is interesting, in that it was a pub very close to the Market Cross.

This cross was erected in the market place to commemorate the spot where monks rested the remains of St Cuthbert, on the way from Lindisfarne to Durham City, to save the remains from marauding  Danes.

Since I made my last post I have been doing a lot more searching and ordered some certificates.

I would like to know about the birth of Henry Darling in 1797, Dunstan/Embleton  - father William mother Huh??

I would still like to know about the marriage of Henry Darling (b 1797 - Dunstan/Embleton) & Isabella ? I presume the marriage to be in 1818-1820 and perhaps in Embleton because that is where the 1st child is born.
children - William Henry   b Jun 1821, Embleton
John Bell         b  May 1823, Embleton
                  Henry              b  Aug  1825, Embleton
Robert Dixon   b  Oct   1828, Embleton
Jane Isabella   b  Aug   1830, Ulgham
                  Thomas            b  abt    1834, Bedlington?

I wonder if Isabella's maiden name was Dixon, based on the fact that their son Robert's middle name is Dixon, and quite often I have found that the woman's maiden name was used as a middle name for one of the children.

Henry's wife Isabella dies in Jun Qtr - Morpeth, Dist

Henry Darling then marries 2nd wife Margaret Jackson - Dec 5, 1840, Morpeth Dist.

their children are:
Margaret Ann      b Jun 1842, Hartford Bridge, Bedlington
Ann                     b Mar 1844, Hartford Bridge, Bedlington
George Jackson  b Sep 1846, Hartford Bridge, Bedlington
James                 b  Feb 28 1848, Hartford Bridge, Bedlington

I appreciate any help that anyone can provide.

Thanks Leighann for all the info.  I have no idea of the name of William's wife, so not sure if this is his family - but it would seem so. Unless I have the wrong location but the 1841 census information for Henry Darling indicates b Dunstan and the 1851 and onward indicate Embleton
re: 1806 John Darling  4th son - is that what the entry says - if so then maybe my Henry is in there somewhere, because you only mentioned two sons prior to John.

Are all the births that you mentioned in Dunstan or Embleton?

I'm surprised to see William Darling married to Jane Dixon because I thought Henry Darling married Isabella Dixon - because they name one of their sons Robert Dixon Darling

I plan to order the marriage record for Henry's 2nd marriage but that won't tell me about his mother - only confirm that his father was William.

I wonder if I order the death record for Henry (I've never ordered a death record before) - would it give me any details of his birth?

Many thanks,

Dee

Hi Leighann

Thanks for your response.

There is a gap in time for Henry Darling to fit into that family of William and Jane Dixon - but it throw the count off for the number of sons.

I still think that Henry Darling married 1st wife Isabella Dixon or Bell, based on the middle names of 2 of their sons. (John Bell Darling and Robert Dixon Darling) - so I didn't really like the fact that Henry's father might have also married a Dixon.  In Henry's second marriage to Margaret Jackon, they use Jackson as the middle name for one of their sons.

I was hoping that my Henry Darling's father William (IGI index at familysearch.org) might tie in somehow with the Famous Grace Darling's family. My Mom was told that the famous Grace was her Dad's Aunt, but that hasn't proved true. But Henry is from Dunstan/Embleton according to the census and I think that is close to the Belford and Bamboro areas where the famous Grace's family was.

Hello

In your Northumberland/Durham Darlings have you come across an Agnus Darling b c 1808? Agnus married Alexander Forsyth before 1832, and somebody told me that her surname was Darling but then would not tell me where that info came from. The name Darling and the place struck a bell on this thread (sorry for hijacking!  Smiley )

Thanks
