I am looking for descendants of Thomas and Charlotte Herbert who were living in San Antonio, Monterey, California, in 1870 (1870 US Census)
The 1900 Census lists the same couple with 3 sons, Eugene, Stanley and Garnet.
Garnet married Audrey Walker and they had a son Garnet born 1918.
The family migrated to the US from Australia in the late 1860s.
Any help received would be very much appreciated.

Thanks Pat, that is really helpful.
I wonder if there is any way of finding out when the father Thomas Herbert and mother Charlotte Herbert died. I noticed that Charlotte was a widow at the time of the 1920 census.
I had heard that the young Garnet, aged 1 year 4 months, migrated to Australia but have no confirmation of that.
In the 1870 US census the letters "M.L." were used after the female child aged 6 months. Would you have any idea what those letters would stand for?
Many thanks again

Glad to be of help, Brindie. I took a look at the 1870 census and saw the ML you mentioned. Some other families had just initials for children too.
Here is info from 1880 census. Thomas, 43 Charlotte, 38 Looks like daughter's name is Una, 11 years old Eugene 8 Stanley, 3 Garnett, 4 months.
I also checked the 1900 census Monterey county Soledad township. I know you have this info already.
Herbert, Thomas, head age 63 born Sept 1836 Herbert, Charlotte age 57 born May 1843 Eugene 28 Stanley W age 23 Garret 20 Interestingly, it shows born Thomas and Charlotte as being born in England and arriving in America in 1866
1900 census Monterey county Soledad township Ada G. Herbert, female age 20 boarder born calif father born in Australia mother born in calif
In 1910 census I find Eugene age 37 married to Maggie. Looks like she is 52! Married 4 years.
Also in Montery county Garret shows up married to Audrey. No sign of Thomas or Charlotte. As to California records, you might want to try this site. http://www.vitalsearch-ca.com/

Thanks Pat for this extra information. I am beginning to put a family tree together now but there is still a lot to trace.
