I have hit the inevitable brick wall! I have Joseph Tuckwell born abt 1776 Berkshire married Levina (Lavinia?) Green born abt 1787 Chilton. They married at Great Marlow Bucks in 1810 and had 6 children all born in the Parish of Cookham. I have traced Lavinia back to her Grandmother but Joseph appears to have arrived from another planet!!!
I have searched BVRecords and IGI also several websites that show the name Tuckwell but all to no avail. So "chatters" any help would be very welcome,

I see they had children John and Sarah plus others, so how about this one from IGI?

Not sure where Long Wittenham is in relation to Chilton.......

Chilton, Berks is now in Oxfordshire, on the Downs not far from Didcot. Long Wittenham is on the south bank of the Thames about seven miles away (as the crow flies).

Joseph Tuckwell in 1841 was recorded as aged 62 - which puts his birth c1778. Is it his death registered March Q 1843 in Cookham district? I am wondering how you know he was born at Chilton, if he didn't survive to have his birthplace recorded in 1851, and you haven't found a christening record?
If perhaps. he is recorded as 'of the Parish of Chilton' in the marriage register, he could quite easily have been born elsewhere in Berkshire - and if he was not baptised as a baby, the Long Wittenham Joseph Tuckwell may be him.

Levina Green: Chr. 1787 Place: Chilton Berks
Died: 1848 Place: Bray Berks
Married: 1810 Place: Great Marlow Bucks
parents: William Green
Rachel Charlwood
Also in the Berks Burial Index I found
Levinia Buried 1848 and Joseph Buried 1843 both Cookham.
Which is why we can't find them in the 1851 census.
So, what do you think?

It is a sad fact that a lot of information in those Family group records has to be taken with a very large pinch of salt.
Whoever submitted this one doesn't know who Joseph's parents are, which makes it pretty certain that they haven't seen a baptism record, and are only guessing the year he was born. They have an exact date for the marriage, which suggests that they may have seen the original record of the marriage entry - which perhaps says that he is 'of Chilton'. But of course that is no indication of where he was born.
The 1841 census does say he was born in Berkshire, however, so you do have that clue.

I expect you are right. They probably looked at her birth place and assumed he came from there as well.
If only the 1841 census told us more...

Hi Vicwiann,
Well, at least I can rule out Chilton as his birth place, thank you for that. There are lots of Tuckwells in Hagbourne which is quite near which I shall investigate.
I still have a feeling he originated in the Cookham, Maidenhead area but have nothing to back this up. I'm sure I've seen something somewhere.... when I wasn't looking for it!
Maybe someone can tell me more about Joseph and Lavinia's time in Cookham or am I clutching at straws?

Abiam, I see that the burial index has Joseph's age as 67, which together with the census information implies an earlier birthdate than 1783/4.

Yes, by my reckoning he would have been born in 1776. I had a look at the N. Archives - -wills - that will (excuse the pun) be something to look into if and when I find him!
Actually I don't imagine he would have had a will. One of his son's first
children was born in the Cookham Union and maybe an earlier one as well. I think they were pretty impoverished.

I have found in the BVIndex: PARENTS JOSEPH AND LAVINIA TUCKWELL

Emma Tuckwell Chr. 1823 Cookham

Mary Tuckwell Chr. 1826 Cookham
Mary Tuckwell Chr. 1826 East Lockinge
Charles Tuckwell Chr. 1829 East Lockinge
George, William, Emma and Mary all appear to have been christened in both places! The only exceptions are James, only in Cookham, and Charles only in East Lockinge.
Is there someone who can find Joseph christened in East Lockinge? We know where lavinia was christened so it's likely to be him.
Or am I getting too excited?

Have just received maps of Berks and see that E. Lockinge is very near Chilton where Lavinia was christened and Farnborough where a lot of her family were born and buried which, hopefully, points to E. Lockinge.
