Hello All, A relation - Charles Price, was a warder at a Wellington prison when he died in 1899. His residence is given as either 2 Rollinson Street, or 2 Rolleston Street. I have also been told that in 1898 he was promoted to assistant warder first class, and "held the office of Quarters".
Another relation looked this up at Archives some years ago, but I now realise I am missing some details.
So my two questions are: 1:Rolleston Street is very close to Mt Cook. Can I assume he was stationed at Mt Cook Prison? 2: What does "office of Quarters" mean?
Thank you, Jean

Hi Jean,
Yes, Rolleston Street runs west up the hill off Wallace Street in Mt Cook, and as far as I know Mt Cook Prison, located off The Terrace not too far away and within walking distance, was the only prison in Wellington at that time. It even held executions there.
I recall an article in the Dominion Post late last year describing its history.
I can't help you with 'office of Quarters', sorry.
Regards, riley

Hello Riley, Thank you for that link. As soon as I saw Buckle Street in the link, I remembered meeting army people at a canteen/bar in the late 1960's at this address. I have now been side tracked into my own history. Jean
