Hi, I am trying to find this chap and am getting nowhere. All I really have to go on is his occupation - Gun Maker. I have him in the '41 and '51 census and I believe he died before the '61 census. He lived in Biggleswade, Bedford and Potton between 1840 and 1847. Is there any way I can find him through his job? I can't seem to find any gunmakers in Beds. He was born in London abt 1815 and with a name like his it's a needle in a haystack!

William Adams died before 1861, as I've found his widow & 3 children living in Bull Lane, St Ives
RG9/979 Folio: 34 Page: 28
Alice Adams age 45, widow, born Godmanchester, Hunts ; Seamstress William Adams, age 15, son, born Biggleswade ; Drover ? Emma L Adams, age 11, daughter, born Bedford James Adams, age 7, son, born St Ives ** loss one eye noted on census sheet
So with James b 1854; I'd go for William Adam's death index in St Ives RD Sept qtr 1853 vol 3b page 142

Thanks for that, I'm not used to dealing with surnames like Adams! Is that James who's lost an eye? Poor lad, I wonder what happened? Thanks for finding his death, I can find an approx dob from his cert with luck! All I have for his birth is "London"!

He seems to have married Alice Yeardye on 26 Oct 1838 at Godmanchester. The marriage certificate should provide his father's name, which will be a start at least

Sorry, amended my message having realised the same thing John. Your message obviously came through while I was amending, and unlike a new message you don't get a red warning!
Just found the marriage on the BVRI. His father is Joseph Adams, hers Endersbye Yeardye

Thanks for all that! I have a lot of the Yeardye family, but was stumped by the name Adams as Yeardy is far easier to deal with and most of my names are unusual ones! Would it be likely that Joseph Adams was a Gunmaker too? Thanks again, Jo

He might have been; alternatively William could have been apprenticed to a gunsmith. But I have to admit you've not got a lot to work with.
London. Very helpful.
I suppose it's the gunsmith that offers you your best hope.
Good luck

That was my feeling! I've just searched the 1841 census for Joseph Adams born between 1770-1795, but no gunmakers yet!
