Wilson Family and Sir William Young
« on: Sunday 06 May 07 20:53 UTC (UK) »

Just found a letter stating that our Wilson family held their farmlands under Sir Wm. Young, Baronet and Director in the Great East India Company. Sir William Young was the owner of a large estate in the S.E. section of County Cavan.  QUESTION: Does anyone know which towns and parishes were located in this section of County Cavan?

Also in the letter was the mention that Sir John Young, son of Sir William, later known as Lord Lisgar, built a fine school in Bailiborough in the early 1840's and my great grandfather, John Wilson,  was a student in this school. QUESTION:  Are there existing records of students attending the Bailieborough school?

Christopher....I'm certain you will have the answers for me.....many thanks,  Marilyn

Marilyn,

I have had a look at Griffith Valuation for you.

There are several Wilsons listed as tenants of John Young in the parish of Bailieborough.

William, James and James Henry in the townland of Corkish.

Charles in Dundragon and Thomas in Drumlon.

Hope this is of help.

Ronnie,  Do you have any information on the school in bailieborough during the 1830 to 1850 time period?  Is there a record of students?  Thanks,  Marilyn

Marilyn,

According to Samuel Lewis' Topographical Dictionary of 1837 there were many schools in the parish of Bailieborough.

"The parochial school at Lisnalea, is supported by the incumbent; and there are three other public schools, in which 180 boys and 110 girls are taught, and a school is in progress in Kellan. There are 13 private schools, in which are about 500 boys and 250 girls. A dispensary was established in 1822."

Ronnie....is there a list of pupil's names for 1837?  Our Wilson's were Scottish Presbyterians....does that make a difference as to which school was attended?  Thanks for the continued help!  Marilyn

Marilyn,

You could e-mail the Cavan Heritage and Genealogy Centre: see pm for address.

They should be aware of its existence if they don't have possession of it themselves.

Ronnie,  I have sent off a note to Cavan Heritage and will hope for the best.  Do you know anything of County Louth? Thank you again.  Marilyn

Hi Marilyn,
I am new to this researching and have been reading some of the old messages and noticed that you are researching Wilsons. I was wondering if there is any connections to my grandparents Charles Haughton Wilson (b 1883), or his wife Eliza Hannah Morrison (b 1884). They had 6 children Walter, Louis, George, Lily, Ida & May (registered as Mary, she is the only one still living). Charles & Eliza are buried in Croghan cemetery, I think Charles died 1944 & Eliza died 1956. They lived in Coromahon House, near Rockfield Killeshandra. They were farmers. According to my Mother there were a lot of Wilsons in this area, just wondered if there was any connection.

Many Thanks

Margaret
