I wonder if anyone can tell me what was offering in California in the 1860s when my rellies emigrated there from Australia. They seem to have settled in San Antonio, Monterey, California.
Many thanks

Possibly gold or cheap land. Looks to be a good place for the fishing industry and a long history with Spainish exploration.
Here is a link that may help answer some questions. http://www.cagenweb.com/monterey/index.html

Try Google or some other search engine to find history of San Antonio area- there might be clues there like a gold find, industry, etc.

A bit late for the California Gold Rush.
Might they have gone to join other rells who had migrated to California earlier?

I would also think, coming from Australia, that is the quickest route to take to the US and many people settled where or close to where they entered the country, as all my relatives went to the Northeast United States from England and Ireland.
