Trying to trackdown marriage details for Thomas DAVIES & Mary Ann STRETTON about 1874 (their oldest child James DAVIES' age is recorded as 8 on the 1881 Census , b.Claycross, Derbyshire)
On the 1891 Census there is recorded a James DARTON? age17 also born in Clay Cross DBY. Mary had by then remarried to a Thomas GROOM.

And son James was called James Barton?

It very much looks that way.
James' birth cert and mary Ann's marriage certs should confirm this.
You can maybe find James' father John on earlier census, as you have his possible birth year (from death reg) Marriage cert of John Barton and mary Ann Stretton would give his father's name.

Thanks for that. I must have mistranslated his last name as DARTON which sent me off in the wrong direction.

On the 1891 image James name could be read as Darton or Barton-but with the marriage/birth info, I think it reaffirms it is Barton

Just thought you'd like to know that by 1886 Mary Ann Barton Davies STRETTON had remarried to become Mary Ann GROOM.
