Hi Bobbyg

Don't worry about the birth date too much on the 1841 census...they are often a few years out as they used to round the ages to multiples of 5.  So if you expect him to be 33 (as per the later census) then they would have actually written 30.  Grin

I am presuming that the Lucy in the 1841 is possibly his sister but there is nothing there to say either way.

Here's an option for Emma's death which is about the right age - but obviously you'd need to confirm

Deaths Jun 1885
Garner    Emma    age 73    Stoke T.    6b   111

Unless he married twice of course...and Lucy is wife No1

Or as you say - it's not him!

It does sound likely but the only way to be sure is to get birth and marriage certificates etc... Census info is useful but you can only make assumptions without anything to reference against.  Smiley Smiley

There are only two children listed in all these Census... do you know which is your grandparent or have we missed someone?

Well thanks for all the help anyway, tis grand to know so much about a formerly rather shadowy ancestor. I have emailed the Stoke Newspapers to see if they have any Obits for him.
