Parish of St Peter and St Paul, Clonmel

The English Protestants took over the parish church after the Seige of Clonmel, in 1650, so the Irish built another church or chapel in Irishtown where they could practice their faith. The present St Mary’s, Irishtown holds half of the old St Mary’s and the ancient parish of Inislouanaght. The other half of the old parish became the parish of St Peter & St Paul’s in 1836. A church built on the site in 1810 served as an auxiliary to St Mary’s Irishtown. As a result of St Peter & St Paul’s being the larger it took over the status of vicariate parish.
