catton carlton ? is either of these right
« on: Tuesday 08 May 07 19:47 BST (UK) »

Hi
i have a rellie who gives his birthplace as CARLTON, Yorkshire, but i am wondering if it could of been possbily CATTON ? , as i have found a christing entry on the IGI for a Henry Rowcliffe chr  August 1820 Catton Nr York

On censuses my Henry is born abt 1821 Carlton,. He married Mary ( who was born Whenby Yorkshire and some of their children were born in Dunnington Yorkshire)..

Has anyone with local knowledge to these places please tell me if Carlton or Catton is nearest to Whenby & Dunnington( have looked on multim,ap, but i have got lost in its new format )

if Carlton is actually Catton , then its another step back on my tree  Cool

best wishes jo

Hi Jo,

GENUKI lists a High Catton, and a Low Catton ("7½ miles ENE. of York")
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ERY/Lowcatton/index.html
but only finds a Carlton in Nottinghamshire.

Not conclusive (although I would also say "7½ miles ENE. of York" is 'near York');

If you enter genuki dunnington  and then genuki whenby in a search engine,
you can view the appropriate GENUKI pages, which might help

maybe somebody
