Ann Prentis 1820c
« on: Tuesday 08 May 07 20:50 BST (UK) »

Hello,

I have Ann Prentis, born 1820c, somewhere in Essex, daughter of Benjamin Prentis.

In 1841, she married Anthony Winship in Co. Durham. The marriage certificate is very blurred and Benjamin Prentis's occupation is illegible. There is nothing to say that he is dead by the time of Ann's marriage but I can't find him in the 1841 census in either Durham or Essex, under any normal spelling of the name.

I imagine that Benjamin's occupation is going to be something within the mining industry - can't think of any other reason for him moving from Essex to Durham. And I also can't see why his daughter would have moved north unless the whole family did so.

Can anyone help with any information on this line. I should specifically like to find Ann's baptism record and the name of her mother.

I'd also love to hear from anyone who has links to this family.

Regards,

Jen

Hi Jen

Can't see Ann's baptism, but one of the following burial records may fit in...

Benjamin Prentice (age 43) bur 5 Apr 1834 at St Andrew (Halstead) Essex
Benjamin Prentis (age 56) bur 19 Jun 1839 at St Peter (Sible Hedingham) Essex

Source: National Burials Index 2nd Ed.

The second death appears to have been registered, June quarter 1839 in Halstead (vol 12 p 92)

Hope this helps!

Thank you for a speedy reply.

I like the second of those two deaths. On censuses1851/61 and 71, Ann gives her birth place as something which looks like something or other Hedingham or Hedington. Typically, when it comes to difficult people, none of these censuses is very clear but what you have given me clarifies it at least in  my mind. I don't suppose there are any marriages for Benjamin Prentis?

And why on earth would Ann have gone to Durham if her family stayed in Essex?

Mystified,

Ann definitely gives her place of birth as Sible Hedingham on at least two censuses.

1871 is indexed as Swelhadingham but could be read as Sivelhedingham; and 1861 is indexed and reads as Civil Hedingham.

A look up in the original registers seems the next step; unfortunately I don't think they are on IGI.

Hi again

I'm afraid my limited resources don't cover baptisms or marriages in the relevant area.

Here's a few more burials in Sible Hedingham...
Eliza Prentis, age not stated, bur 2 Dec 1810
William Prentice, 9m, 3 Apr 1822
Sarah Prentice, 31, 7 Jul 1822
Elizabeth Prentice, 2, 13 Feb 1834
Louisa Prentice, 3+, 29 Feb 1848
Matilda Prentice, 41, 5 Oct 1850

At a guess, Sarah or Matilda could have been Ann's mother. In fact, they may have been Benjamin's first and second wives respectively, but it is only a guess.

Ann could have ended up in Durham for any number of reasons. Our ancestors were more mobile than we give them credit for. She may simply have found a 'position' in service away from home.

Prentices living in Sible Hedingham in 1841 include: Sarah, 70+, governess; the family of Robert, 32, innkeeper, Matilda, 32, Hannah, 5; and Ann, 35+, female servant.

Thank you Richard and Dave for all of this information. Maybe I have to wait until I can get to Essex so that I can search the parish registers for marriages and baptisms.

This is a friend's family but I know from my own just how much our ancestors travelled. My surprise was in finding a young woman travelling from the south east of the country to the far north east. A long way to go to be in service. I suppose she may have gone with a married brother or sister if her parents had died; there were certainly other Essex born Prentice/ Prentis families in Co. Durham. In fact, the only Ann Prentis of the right age, I can find in Durham, in the 1841 census, has "yes" in the born in county column. This one was indeed a servant so I imagine whoever gave the information didn't bother with finding out where the maids were born.

Onwards and upwards.

Thanks again,

Jen
