Mary Ann Owens. To suffer is to grow stronger.
|
Howdy, Ive recently found a rellie on the 1851 census, it says she was born in Sandhurst around 1804, I know she was called Mary, but dont have a surname. All I know is she went on to marry a man called Emanuel Howell in Ashleworth, Gloucestershire just before 1822. She is living with him in the Gloucetershire 1851 census. Would appreciate it if anybody has any info on her Thanks Matthew

I can't see anyting on the IGI.
I should ask for a marriage look up on the Gloucestershire board.
Once you know Mary's maiden name you will be able to look for her baptism in Sandhurst.

I'm sure you will have found the IGI entry:
bap 24 July 1803 Sandhurst Mary dau Benjamin and Margaret Barnes
With a name like Mary Barnes you should probably have more proof but it looks likely.
Margaret is still alive in 1851 (83, b Brockworth) living with her son Benjamin in Sandhurst.

Hi Richard, thanks, were they living in the Church house. Do you know if recieving alms mean they were put up by the priests? And I take it the 70/80+ is the ages of the two? Thats a weird entry Never mind it means I have more to find Cheers Richard appreciate it Matthew!

The 70+ and 80+ are ages and means that they have given their ages as 70-74 and 80-84, but they are unreliable. Her age is at least consistent with her 1851 age.
There are several people living in Church House, some of whom receive alms; similarly for the next door building. It may be that Church House is an alms house run by the church; you may be able to find out more by Googling. In 1868 the church was said to run a charity that gave away £30 a year. Alms houses are often the result of legacies from local benefactors, but the name suggests a religious connection.
An entry on the IGI suggests that Benjamin was born in 1866 but there is no evidence to support this.
Possible deaths:
Mar 1843 Benjamin Barnes Gloster 11 277
Jun 1853 Margaret Barnes Gloster 6a 116

Something to follow up/track down the marriage, rather than a definite:
Margaret Organ (1767) and Margaret Pemberton (1768) are the only Margarets baptised in Brockworth between 1758 and 1778. Margaret Organ appears to die in 1770 which leaves Margaret Pemberton as the best bet.

The 1841 census entry for Emmanuel and Mary Howell has their children: Joseph (17), Eliza (12), Elizabeth (12), Mary (7) and Ann (2). The IGI also has Sarah (1822), Comfort (1825; she is living as a servant elsewhere), Benjamin (1837) and Emanuel (1842).
This may explain Benjamin's absence from the 1841 census:
Dec 1837 Benjamin Howell Gloucester 11 251 (Gloucester includes Ashleworth)
The name however strengthens the case for Mary being Benjamin and Margaret's daughter.
