1871 Census: Henry Street, Ross Thomas WATKINS H M 56 Plasterer Heref Much Birch Isabel WATKINS W M 55 India (British Subject) James WATKINS S U 18 Plasterer Heref Much Dewchurch Herbert WATKINS Gson U 2 Heref Hereford Emma SIMMONDS Serv U 12 Gen Serv Heref Brampton Abbots

On neither the 1871 or 1891 census was Herbert listed as a cripple, or indeed having any ailments/conditions.
Hope that helps
Best wishes

1841 Census, Much Birch. Living alone, Barracks? Much Marcle. William Gunter age 75 (1766) stone mason not born in county
nearby Birch common Joseph Gunter age 35, stone mason, born Foriegn parts Elizabeth age 33, born in county, as are the children Mary 14 Richard 9 Thomas 5 Sophia 6 months also a younger brother? Benjamin Gunter age 25, mason, not born in county so William was a stone mason in the west Indies, and Benjamin seems to have been born in the UK, so the family returned before 1814-15
There are Watkins and Gunters here in the Church records for Much Birch http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/
cheers fred

I did reply, but it seems to have been lost in the ether..........
The short version of the post was that on the 1881 census, Joseph Gunter is entered as having been born "on board the Allenhope" West Indies.
I presume the Allenhope to be a ship, so perhaps there would be a passenger register with addresses etc?
