Help with BICKERDYKE family
« on: Wednesday 09 May 07 12:06 BST (UK) »

Hi Need help, not much info at all really
EMILY BICKERDYKE 1918 my husbands mother married to John Silverwood 1916
She had 3 sisters Emma Ivy and Lily
Mother Lily Louisa Potts (nee Bickerdyke) married to Ben
Lily Louisa died 21.04.46 living @ 7 Rillbank St. Leeds 3 aged 58, buried Woodhouse Cemetery.
Don't know what surname the 3 sisters went by?
My husband has no recollections of that side of the family through his childhood, except that sister Lily was married to Harry Green (Ripon stonemason).
Don't seem to be able to find any records, or maybe I'm not looking in the right places.
Hope someone can help.
Thankyou

Hi silver1,

What is it that you are looking for?  Smiley

If it's 20th century births marriages and deaths, they are searchable here:
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx

Make sure you choose Complete BMD Index ranges & Images 1837-1983 and view the 4 quarters of each year.

Thought I would help you out with a few look ups in the indexes to start you off - but I soon got confused!

Here is the birth of Emily Bickerdyke in 1918
Jul/Aug/Sep 1918 Emily Bickerdyke, mothers maiden name Gaines, Leeds area ref 9b 521.

I was going on to find the sisters, when I saw that the mother was Potts nee Bickerdyke - is this the mother of these 4 girls?
So were Emliy, Emma, Ivy and Lily childen of Lily Potts nee Bickerdyke - in which case that will not be Emliy's birth as she would be a Potts?

But you are looking for a Bickerdyke? Yep - i got confused!

Or was Lily firstly a Gaines (as per birth entry) then married a Bickerdyke, then remarried a Potts?

Seconldly, Lily Louisa looks like she was born about 1888. I'll have a quick look for her birth under Bickerdyke and Gaines

OK, it is all coming togwther now! Here are the births of the other girls:

Lily Bickerdyke JAn/Feb/Mar 1908 Leeds 9b 444 (this is a possible, there are no mother's maiden names im the index before 1910ish)

Ivy Bickerdyke mother's maiden name Gaines, Jan/Feb/Mar 1912, Leeds 9b 664

Emma Bickerdyke Jan/Feb/Mar 1915 mothers maiden name Gaines Leeds 9b 699

Looks like Thomas died after 1918 (when Emily born) and Lily Louisa remarried to a Mr Potts

Do you want me to go on?
These are all easily looked up on the link Tati gave - I dont want to spoil the fun of it for you!
You can hunt through for the marriages of the four girls, deaths etc.

As for going backwards, Lily Louisa Gaines should be on the 1901 and 1891 censuses.

Sorry I made a mistake the death for Lily Louisa was January 1946 not April as I previously said.
She was buried at Woodhouse cemetary in Leeds, service was held at St Simons Church.
Can I just ask (may sound stupid)
How do I determine who is the right husband? I searched through marriages for Lily (the daughter) and there was several possibilities, it was only because I knew who she married , otherwise I could have picked another husband ??
Huh

no questions are stupid.

The simple answer is - you dont! With a common surname there will be hundreds of possibilities.
With a name like Bickerdyke you are lucky.
but you will need to send for certs to prove they are the right ones - should show father, Thomas.

Sometimes you need to approach things from a number of different angles. For example, seeing if Lily senior made a will-  if so it may mention her daughters by their married names. Or finding the marriage of one of them - and then you may find one of the sisters was a witness and was already married, so gives her married name. Keep an open mind and slowly piece bits together, is my advise, and most of all - never assume anything!
Happy hunting - I take it you are into it yourself now, so i shall back off!
But hopefully the info on Lily actually being a Gaines was useful.

Maybe this is why you couldn't find her death as Potts?

Lily L Bickerdyke married Benjamin POTTER in Leeds in Mar 1/4 of 1921

And her death as Lily L POTTER happened in Leeds in the March 1/4 of 1946 she was 58 ref 9b page 512.

Carol
