Middlewich Baptism Lookup - Thomas SPRAGG
« on: Wednesday 09 May 07 16:55 BST (UK) »

Hello All,

I have a baptism from another researcher for Thomas SPRAGG at Middlewich St Michael and All Angels for 19th August 1744.  Is there anyone who has access to the Middlewich PR (or visiting CRO with some time to spare) who can check this for me and provide the details?  I believe that the father may also be Thomas.

I'm also interested in any other SPRAGG's baptised around this date, especially a brother Ralph - I realise that this is a big ask, I have no idea if Ralph is older or younger so if the Middlewich registers are as big as some of the others I've used please ignore this!!

Any help very much appreciated, these pesky SPRAGG's are one of my brick walls!

Jean

Added 13/05/2007 18:37 Have found a possible burial in Shropshire for Ralph which would indicate he was born c1737

I have checked IGI but don't have access to BVRI (just in case they are there!)

Added 15/05/2007, link to Shropshire board looking for MI for Ralph SPRAGG (1737):

Hi Jean
I had a look too on the BIVRI and agree with alli that there was nothing in Middlewich. However there are quite a few Spraggs-including Thomas and Ralphs in Great Budworth but I'm not sure if this is the area you are looking for-.
Thomas   christened 22/11/1725-Father Thomas
Margaret christened  11/06/1732-Father Thomas
John        christened 05/10/1735-Father Thomas
Ralph       christened 27/11/1737-Father Thomas

This Ralph could possibly tie in with the burial record that you found.

Some older ones-
Thomas Spragg christened 30/05/1702 - Father Ralph
Ralph Spragg christened    23/05/1667 - Father Thomas

There's a later Thomas with children -
Joseph(1807)Ann(1808)Margaret(1811)Hannah(1812)Ellen Jackson(1814)Thomas(1815)Sarah(1817)James(1819)Betsy(1821)Robert(1822)-their mother was Hannah.

There are other names as well but I've just listed Thomas and Ralphs.
The LDS film number is 1655825.

Please let me know if you would like any further information but apologies if they're not the ones you're looking for.

Regards

Neptune

Hi Neptune,

That information is great, I think that the Ralph 1737 is the right one.  There seems to be some connection with Great Budworth and I had some information from the PR's but not all that you've provided!  Thomas Spragg born 1744 farms at Somerford Booths but has a lease on a property in Great Budworth.  I already have the later information for the children of Thomas and Hannah (they are my 3xggrandparents).

I really appreciate this information, and if it's not too much trouble, anything else from BVRI.

Hi Jean -
I'm glad the information is useful - I'll start with the earlier entries -

GREAT BUDWORTH  FHL film 1655825
Elisabetha Spragg christened 17 Aug 1662 Father Thomas
Ralphe                                      23 May 1667   "           "
Maria                                        06 Mar 1675   "           "
Susanna                                   06 Mar 1675   "           "

Mary                                         25 Oct 1696 Father Ralph
John                                         08 Aug 1699  "          "
Thomas                                    30 May 1702  "          "

THORNTON LE MOORS  FHL film 1836235
Margaret                                  19 Oct 1783 Father Thomas Mother Ann

Thomas                                    29 Jan 1792 Father James Mother Sarah
Mary                                         17 Nov 1793      "                    "
William                                     14 Feb 1796       "                    "

GOOSTREY CUM BARNSHAW FHL film 1655823
Joseph                                     22 May 1807 Father Thomas Mother Hannah
Ann                                          10 May 1808      "                     "

I think these may be the eldest two children of your Thomas and Hannah-you said you already have their details but I wasn't sure if you have the christening dates. I've just listed the eldest two for now as they're in a different place to the others.
Also the marriage(Goostrey cum Barnshaw FHL film 1655823)-
Thomas Spragg and Hannah Witter on 14th May 1807 .

There are more(christenings and marriages) which I'll do tomorrow if that's ok.
I'm happy to let you have the details if you would like them.

Kind Regards

Neptune

Neptune this is wonderful!  Grin

If you are sure it isn't too much trouble I would really appreciate the information.  I have the baptisms of the other children of Thomas and Hannah nee WITTER at Great Budworth apart from son John who I think was born about 1810 (from the MI at Astbury St Mary).

I do wish they weren't all called Thomas or Ralph though (with the odd Margaret thrown in)!

There was a 3 life lease that expired in 1728 and the lives were Thomas, Ralph & Susannah so that ties in beautifully with the BVRI information.  Eventually I will untangle these families......

Thank you for all your help,

Jean

(*The BIVRI entry states born 1877 but gives the christening date as 14/4/1899-not sure if this is a mistake or he was christened later?  )

That's all of the christenings Jean - they may not all be usefil to you but at least you have plenty to keep you busy!
There are a few marriages on another disc which  I'll post tomorrow or Thursday if that's ok.

Hope this helps

Elizabeth Sprag to John Peacock   8 Dec 1778    FHL film no 1836235
Thornton Le Moors
Sarah Sprag  to Thomas Yewd       31 May 1781   FHL film no 1836235

Thomas Sprag to Hannah Witter    14 May 1807   FHL film no 1655823
Goostrey cum Barnshaw
Catherine Spragg(age full) to Samuel Grindrod Pugh (age full) 6 Feb 1872

Emma Spragg (age full)to Thomas Duckers(age full) 22 Oct 1878

John Spragg(age34) to Amelia Green(age39) 14 Jun 1903
Dukinfield Cheshire- Fathers John Spragg and William Green (no film no)

They may not all be relevant  but at least you have them. I think the church in Wallasey would possibly be St Hilarys as that is the parish church.
I suppose there may be more entries as well as these on the FHL films .
The only marriage I could find for a Ralph Sprage was to Johane Warren 15 Aug 1623 in Fordington Dorset( FHL 1279496)
If you would like me to check any more on the BIVRI just let me know.

Hope this helps

Hi Neptune,

I really appreciate your time and trouble with this.  Sorry to take a while to reply but I've been offline.

I'm sure all this information will be useful in making connections between these families - it'll all come together eventually!  Smiley
