Can anyone tell me if there is an online index for Oxfordshire wills? (I've tried the National Archives).

If not, would the FHS be able to help or would I need to contact the Oxon Records Office?

Hello Jill -

Can anyone tell me if there is an online index for Oxfordshire wills? (I've tried the National Archives).

If not, would the FHS be able to help or would I need to contact the Oxon Records Office?

Jill

Oxfordshire Record Office holds wills proved in the Oxfordshire Court, and also those proved in the Peculiars such as Banbury.  The wills are indexed in 3 books.

Oxfordshire Record Office will always answer information about their holdings, by phone or preferably by email - see www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/oro

I have copies of each of the three books, and am happy to look up specific names (give surname, forename, date of probate/death) to see if there is an entry.

Oxfordshire FHS is always willing to have a go at answering questions - there's a QuickHelp button on the homepage at www.ofhs.org.uk .

Many thanks for that, Wendy.

I shall email the Records Office now and ask for a copy of the William Foster will.

In the book 1733-1857 the GOMM wills are mostly around the Pishill area near Henley, with just a couple from Ascot under Wychwood.

The earlier book has most in Chinnor.  Thhere is one reference to a Robert in North Leigh in 1604 - of interest?
