I am trying to trace the family of Henry James Santon born 1847 Newington, London / Surrey. His father was James Santon, who was dead by 1872 when Henry James married Mary Ann Murray.
I have found Henry James and Mary in the 1881 census at 9 Pownall Terrace, Lambeth, Surrey. Can anyone help with information before 1872, especially on James Santon?

That was really quick, thank you so much!
It is not quite right though the age appears right - it was the 1861 census? I'm looking for a Henry James son of James really - that is the father's name I have from Henry James' marriage certificate.
However, the Santon family is quite small and I think that many of the London Santons are in fact related - I just can't quite get all the links yet! Henry James was a Carman / Horsekeeper later in his career, as was one of his sons I believe, so I think the family you found could well be related somehow.
Henry James was my great grandfather by the way - alas the family has passed down little information. Thanks again.

It is 1871 and can be checked  by looking at the refs given.

Rg13 = 1901
RG12= 1891
Rg11= 1881
Rg10=1871
RG9 = 1861
HO107=1851 (higher piece numbers)
HO107= 1841 (lower piece numbers)

If I am right, the daughter Alice you found is Alice Margaret who was christened in the same place on the same day as Emma Alice Santon, the daughter of Henry James Santon.
If you have details on any other London Santons I'd love to know.
