mount pleasant
« on: Sunday 13 May 07 11:26 BST (UK) »

Hi all, while i was trying to find out more information about my relative James Anderson (? born abt 1773 middlestots edrom berwick) i came across a duns sheriff court will of a James Anderson which said he was formally residing at mount pleasant and afterwards at middlestots dated 5/5/1835.

I was just wondering if anyone knew where Mount pleasant was? i tried looking on google maps etc and can't seem to find it.

I have a birth certificate for his son George which states he was a carter, and his wife was Elizabeth Ford, but can't seem to find any records of him after that.

I'm guessing it was/is a farm the same as Middlestots and Blackadder.

The only Mount Pleasant I know of is a farm at the cross roads of B6460 and the A 6112 about half way between Swinton and Duns.    It is just along the road from Middlestots which is on the B6460 on the Berwick side of Mount Pleasant.  I would have thought that it might well be in Fogo parish.

rainbowuk and boswells thank you for the information, i managed to find a map of the area in 1820 and found it!!
If anyone is interested it is on the road between black adder and fogo (not sure if the modern roads follow the old ones of 1820) it was/is on the intersection of a crossroads that lead north over the black adder river to nisbet, and south west of kimmergham.
now i just need to find out if this James Anderson is my relation:)

I did find this interesting item about the James Anderson of mt pleasant though.

Precognition against James Anderson, Walter Logan, Andrew Inglis for the crime of night poaching
Date    1844
Accused    James Anderson, labourer, Address: Mount Pleasant, Edrom, Berwick
Accused    Walter Logan, labourer, Address: Nisbet Mill Edrom, Berwickshire
Accused    Andrew Inglis, servant to George Aitchison, Address: Residing with George Aitchison, Mount Pleasant, Edrom, Berwick

The only thing is with this is on the birth certificate of James and Elizabeths son George, james's profession is listed as carter.

There is a James Anderson buried at Fogo 11/2/1848 aged 62, his wife was Jane Anderson buried 25.1.83 aged 87 yrs.

Would they fit in at all?

Hello IV426
If you look to the east on your map from Mount Pleasant, Middlestots in shown as M Shot.  Mount Pleasant is a very small farm - probably no longer in business - with one cottage.  Middlestots is a much bigger farm with about 6 cottages.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Beckey, i am not sure where James died, the only concrete information i have on him is the birth certificate of their son George that (gros 738/0020 0030) he was born 16th dec 1805 but the listing is on the 30/12/1805 when George was baptised in duns in front of the congregation.

On the extract i have it says parents: James Anderson carter, Elizabeth Ford it also has the letters FR286 which i am not sure of the meaning of.

There was a mention of a James Anderson aged 69, born c. 1772, an Ag Lab, living at Kellae Bastle in one of the census's with a wife Isabel aged 70, as isabel is used along with Elizabeth i am assuming that this is them, it also lists them living with a Helen Anderson aged abt 40 who i am not sure about the identity of.

George left the area sometime in his 20's for some reason and was married Sarah Emond on the 23rd july 1830 in either melrose, galashiels or selkirk (can't find that out). they had their first child margaret on the 28 may 1831 in galashiels, their 9th child (11 in all!!) was walter Anderson born 2 jul 1848 in selkirk, he is my line.

George and Sarah left plymouth england 22 nov 1854 arrived Geelong Victoria Australia 21 feb 1855
ship "marchioness of salisbury:..nine of their 11 children.

I am not sure if James and Elizabeth stayed in the Edrom area or moved to Selkirk, if they are the mt pleasant/kelloe andersons then i guess they stayed behind, but can't be 100% certain of that.

Alan: i had a look on a modern map and it looks like the mount pleasant crossroads is still part of the modern road system there, its on the north road to duns and the east west road between fogo and blackadder. i guess a lot of the smaller farms in those days were "gobbled" up by the bigger farms around that time.

I am still trying to find any hints on why george would have gone to Selkirk though, i am guessing employment opportunities but it seems like a long way to travel for someone in those days

Jean                      D         1                              "         ".

Hope that they fit your line.

There isn't a James that fits at Selkirk in that year.

thanks again beckey, yes that seems to be them. the older 2 siblings margaret and elizabeth seem to be elsewehere at the time.
I found margaret with her grandparents the emonds in the 1841 census aged 10, in somewhere that looks like it says west port south side selkirk?

in 1841 george and sarah were at dunsdale cottages selkirk, i am not sure if either pine row or dunsdale cottages still exsist in modern day selkirk.

The only Margaret that fits the bill in 1851 is,
Bridgelands, Selkirk,
Margaret Anderson  Serv.  U  19  House Serv.  Selkirk, Yarrow.
(to George Roger & family).

She may have got married of course.

Have been through the pre 1855 MI's for Berwickshire that I have and have not found James.

hi again, margaret was married on the 16th dec 1853 in melrose roxborough scotland to a David sanderson, so maybe in 1851 she was around that area?
