baptisms of illegitimate children? COMPLETE
« on: Wednesday 09 May 07 21:49 BST (UK) »

Gentlepersons: I am VERY unfamiliar with the ethics of church baptisms in the 1830's in Berwickshire. My gggrand-father, I am certain, was illegimitate. I have been reading some Scottish genealogy books and they indicate that practically all illegitimate children in those years would have been baptised. Yet, I cannot seem to find his baptism!  Cry  How far afield from Ladykirk and Duns should I look for that baptism? Or, is my information wrong and he may have neve been baptised?? Any comments from people who have had similar situations in Berwickshire in those years will be most sincerely appreciated. Pat

Hello
I am afraid that this answer will certainly not help you specifically but your question was interesting. My great-aunt Mary, who, I have discovered, was also illegitimate, absolutely INSISTED that I was baptised, finally at the age of 13 years. She was born in Stranraer, Wigtownshire. I have not yet confirmed that she was baptised. She was born into a Catholic family so must have had a strong religious upbringing.

Hi Pat

I always work on the assumption that every child was baptised until I can prove differently.

Where have you looked for the baptism?

Can you find baptisms of siblings?

Remember that the OPR's only contain baptisms for the Church of Scotland.

Regards

Oops - He apparently had no true siblings - his Mother married a number of years after his birth (about 15!) and went on to have children in a legal marriage in a parish quite a ways away from Ladykirk and Duns -- she was in both Ayton and Eyemouth during that legal marraige. Pat

Could you post the name of the person you're looking for? Maybe someone can find him, perhaps under a different name?  Smiley

My ancestor is Charles KING b. about 1830 in Berwickshire, the apparent illegitimate son of Elizabeth King who was born 1813-1815. (There is a different Charles King born about 1826 in Ladykirk who is NOT my direct line ancestor -- he is a cousin to my Charles. Charles is in 1841 census with his apparent Mother and grandparents. I think I've tried this one before. Grin I can't find anything that fits, it's even more difficult when FamilySearch decides to fail!  Roll Eyes
