Sutherland, South Town Belt, Christchurch. Help plse.
« on: Wednesday 09 May 07 22:48 BST (UK) »

Could some kind people give me suggestions on how to find the full name of a Mr Sutherland, South Town Belt, Christchurch. Sorry don't even have his initial.

My William McLauchlan & Christina Sutherland were married at the home of Mr Sutherland , South Town Belt, Christchurch on 4 June 1868.
Registered 30 May 1868. Rev. George Grant, Officiating Minister.

Both were of age.
Would ITM notices have who he was.?
They were both Prebyterians.
Someone told me the records might be at the Knox Church.

Thank you for reading above,
Tiff

As a modern day local it's hard to imagine where the South Town Belt might have been in 1868. The 1881 Electoral roll shows a number of Sutherlands living to the south of then township of Christchurch.

Donald, A farmer living in Middle Lincoln Rd.
Donald Gunn, A tradesman  living in Addington.
Donald, A hotelkeeper in Southbridge.
Stewart, A farmer at Yaldhurst.
Thomas, A labourer of Halswell.
William, A barman at Southbridge.

On the same roll a William Mclauchlan is listed as a Farmer at Brookside, which is about half way between Lincoln and Southbridge.

On the 1893 Roll both William and Christina are listed as farming at Waterton in the Rangitata area further south of Christchurch.

I would be tempted to check out the Southbridge connection. Knowing the geography it seems more likely.

Thank you very much for your lookup Alamar which I find very interesting espec. the Sutherland, Middle Lincoln Rd. (Christina & William farmed at Lincoln before they went to Brookside) & William & Donald Sutherland at Southbridge. Would love to get to the bottom of these three.

The boundaries of the City of Christchurch when originally established were:
South Town Belt -Moorhouse Ave.
East Belt - Fitzgerald Ave.
North Belt - Bealey Ave.
West Belt - Deans Ave.

Do you know when the Rolls first started in the South Island.  Am thinking if there was one in 1871 I might find the Mr Sutherland South Town Belt.
Apprciate your help,
Tiff

Hi Tiff.

I looked at the city library’s card index today for the 1868 marriage. The typed copy of the actual register for St Paul’s Presbyterian Church reads as follows.

4 June 1868 at the house of Mr Sutherland South Town Belt
William McLauchlan, bach, farmer of full age
Christina Sutherland, spin, domestic servant of full age

Witnesses
James Sutherland, farmer, Selwyn
Marjory Dunn, Lincoln

I certify this is a true copy of the original registered 30 May. George Grant, officiating minister.

The certification at the end is new to me but all the marriages were so noted so it simply must have been Rev Grant’s way of doing things.

Went through the Canty Provincial Council Electoral Rolls but found no Sutherlands resident in Moorehouse Ave. The closest was A Robert resident in Cashel Street but leasing part of the Lunatic Asylum Reserve in Riccarton. An Angus Sutherland also leased part of the same reserve but he seemed to live there. A William Sutherland lived in Opawa.

Before leaving I looked at the Cyclopaedia of NZ of 1903. William McLauchlan is included together with some info about him as well as his photo. Of his wife the entry says “ He was married in NZ to Miss Christina Sutherland of Caithness Scotland and has two sons and one daughter.”

So she’s a Highland lassie right enough but of her parentage I found nothing certain. I Xeroxed the Cyclopedia page if you do not already have it.

Dear Alamar,

How very generous of you to go to all that trouble on my behalf.
Thank you so much & also xeroxing the Clyclopedia page on William McL. Would be great to see.

Christina's father was William Sutherland so will have to find out about the William in Opawa (age) & then again he may have been her brother...don't know any of her siblings's names. Will  look into Angus & Robert S.

Christina came to NZ on the ship "Lincoln" which arrived June 1867. There were no other Sutherlands aboard or any passengers from Caithness, another blank.

Had the info. re her marriage. James Sutherland, witness, farmer, Selwyn, I simply can't find. Marjory Dunn was William's sister Ann's daughter who lived in Lincoln.

I think Selwyn must have covered a fairly wide area. Wonder from where to where.

You may have seen my other posting re Sutherlands where I am hoping someone posting on it may have a Sutherland ancestor who I can connect up with mine.

You have been a terrific help...very much appreciated.
Many thanks
Tiff

Hi Tiff

The Selwyn area is nowdays the area immediately south of the city as far as the Rakaia...in general terms. What it meant in 1870's we can only guess at but I do not think it vastly different. There is now a Selwyn District Council based on Leeston, Darfield and Rolleston and of course the Selwyn parliamentary seat. The Selwyn River flows through it, hence the name i suppose.

If you send me a PM with your snail mail address I will forward the Cyclopaedia article to you.

Cheers

Thanks again Alamar.

Have been looking up shipping lists & found a James Sutherland age 21-Caithness-Ploughman who arriv. Lyttelton Dec 9 1863 on David G. Fleming.  Could be the witness at Christina's wedding.

Thanks for your ideas re Selwyn District.. know the present one quite well.
P/M with my address sent.

Hi Alamar,

Received  your copy of William McLauchlan's details yesterday. Looks like my father except for the beard.
Thanks so much for your kindness. Glad you found it. Very interesting.
