Norton in Hales MI - SPRAGG
« on: Sunday 13 May 07 11:05 BST (UK) »

I think that I've just found the burial of one of my stray SPRAGGs (from Cheshire) at Norton in Hales:

Ralph SPRAGG bur 30 Apr 1825 Norton in Hales aged 88

I also think that this might be his son:

Thomas SPRAGG bur 29 Mar 1817 Norton in Hales aged 47

Does anyone have access to MI's for Norton in Hales who could please give me the details of any SPRAGG graves?

Jean - very grateful for any SPRAGG information..... Smiley

Hi Jean. I couldn't wait , My wife's sister lives in Madley Staffs,so I pestered her to go and see them , and of course you can go through Norton in Hales. So far so good, on arriving at the churchyard I noticed a lack of grave stones , in fact in think there were four . Seeing a man cutting his Lawn in the next garden I inquired why. He told the cemetery for Norton is Half a mile down the road. He also told me that all the graves in the church yard were laid down and covered with turf to protect them.  (strange). We looked in the cemetery down the road but graves only date from the late 1800.  to late for your two. I've now sent an email to Shropshire Archives to see what they can find , this may a few days. in the mean time I will try and contact the local vicar to see if he can help in any way. contact you soon regards Dave.

Hello Dave,

I really appreciate your help with this, so many churches have now moved stones to pathways or removed them altogether.  Hopefully the MI's have been transcribed if the stones have been covered.

Thank you so much for your time and trouble with this, it really is appreciated.

I have now found a baptism for Ralph in Cheshire in 1737, so hopefully can confirm we have the right line.  I'm posting a link to the topic on the Cheshire board so that anyone researching the name can find it.

Thanks again,

Hi Jean I contacted the local Vicar to-day. I'm sorry to say he didn't help much.according to him there is no records of graves at the church for the ones laid down they have records from the the new cemetery but of course that no good to us as it was to late for your two. To make things worse I have had a reply from Shropshire Archives to-day  the the transcript goes as follows.
Dear Mr Arnold
thank you for your enquiry dated 15 may . we have transcripts of the Monumental Inscriptions for Norton in Hales produced from a survey by the Shropshire Family History Society between 1980s and 1992. The description Say's that the gravestones in the churchyard were laid flat in the latter part of 19th century and a cemetery with a chapel established about half a mile away along Bearstone Lane which links Norton in Hales with Woore. One hundred and forty gravestones can be discerned in the churchyard including a number buried under turf.

Unfortunately the page with the index covering S is missing from our catalogue. I scanned through the transcriptions but this was difficult to do efficiently at speed as they are produced in upper case. I found one entry for Spragg: James died 31/01/1877 aged 76 years: plot number 6b in the cemetery area. This grave can be found nearest  to the fence on the right of the graveyard if you stand with your back to the chapel, the third row from the cemetery boundary (road?).

There seemed to be no one else listed for the same grave. If you wish to check my finding you could come and see the transcripts here(1606- 1982) or you could contact the family history society who have made copies available.
Their website is:
www.sfhs.org.uk

Hope you got all that, sorry I can't be much more help. James maybe worth looking into. if he is related . also on my searches I found a Jas Spragg from Adderley ( which is also close to me) he married a Nelly Heath. Next time I go past the cemetery (it will be soon ) I will look for James Spragg's grave. and see what I can find. I will keep in touch best regards Dave.

Hi Jean . It's me again  I went to cemetery on Bearstone Lane to-day. I couldn't find gravestone for James Spragg , but I think I've fond the approximate spot,  not much help I know, if he is related and the stone is buried under the turf maybe it could be exhumed  so we could have a look at it?. Sounds almost morbid, but it bring an air of excitement into our daily life. regards Dave.

ps. You can find pictures of Norton in Hales church on the website in my last post.

Dave,

I can't thank you enough for all your efforts with this.  I hope you have enjoyed your trips out!  Smiley

Unusual that the stones were laid flat so early, but can't be helped - I think that I will have to see the parish register for the burials at some point, but no hurry, still making good progress with this line.  I'll check out the connection with James SPRAGG.

I won't be online again for a couple of weeks but will pick this up when I get back.

Thanks again,

Jean
