I'm trying to trace anything at all about James Challoner b 1867 in Ketley, by the 1890's he was living in the North East of England. I have found some census details but as the surname is spelt Challinor, Chellener, Challenor and Chalnor I'm not very confident. Any help gratefully received.

Unfortunately the two females on the page are both Elizabeth - Mansell and Powell

I had a look on the 1851 for an Elizabeth Powell and Mansell but nothing there that was obviously her.
Perhaps get the birth cert to get her maiden surname.

Hi angelfish,
Not at all!
First I looked up Henry CHALLONER in the 1881 census on FamilySearch.
The census facility is only half-working on FamilySearch at present - if that! But it still combines many spellings and there weren't all that many with the given name of Henry so it was easy to find one b ca 1860 in Ketley. And he was with a MANSELL family in Durham plus one of his brothers. He's actually listed in the index as the MANSELL Head's Grandson - but that isn't currently showing in the household ...
Then I looked for your James b ca 1867 in Ketley - and there he was still in Ketley with his Mum Elizabeth and other siblings.
(I now notice that there's also a Henry CHALLINOR, Iron Pudler, b Ketley, age 37, lodging in Wellington with a MOORE family.)
Then I looked for a likely death of William on FreeBMD after finding that Elizabeth was a widow.
All free facilities!
All the best,
JAP

Thank you, I've only been doing this for a week so still have a lot to learn, funny you should mention the Moores, in the 1891 census Elizabeth Challoner had a William Moore boarding with her at 2 Thorpe St Stockton on Tees and in 1871 Joseph and Sarah Chellener (spelling 1851 ) had a Henry Moore (brother in law) living with them. I made a bit of a leap and assumed that Moore was Sarahs maiden name. Tbh I made a bit of an assumption that they were Williams parents but the Moore connection is starting to look a lot less tenuous. As you can see *coughs* I've made a lot of progress . I shall check out those sites you mentioned but my heads spinning trying to keep the generations in order, the Mansells seem to be my great-great-great grandparents . I wouldn't have got this far without help from you two. Thank you again. x

Just had a quick look on FamilySearch and found 2 christenings for William Mansells in 1815 in Shropshire, one in Wellington (my favourite) and one Wroxeter so could possibly have found Williams parents. Don't think I've seen freecen so I'm off there now to suss it out. Thank you x
