Armstrong 1881 lookup please

I am looking for Janett Armstrong in 1871 census please. Born Flimby in 1833. Also does it say on 1881 census how the people in the same household are related to her. Both census places are Cumberland. I think this is the Janett I am looking for and if so she has never married but I think the children are hers.
Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks. SUE.

In 1881 Janett is "w" for widowed (little white lie?). A 20 yr old Mary is listed as her daughter and she has a son aged 15, Peter? (name difficult to read) William Armstrong aged 79 is a boarder, Janet Armstrong 7 mo is "granddau" and Sam McMillan age 50 is a widowed boarder.

Either shes hiding well in 1871 or they're still in Scotland (I see her son was born in Scotland c1866......)  Undecided

Thank you for your replies. This seems to be the Janet I am looking for.  No she was not a widow but an unmarried mother (of two) I wonder who Janet the grandaughter belongs to???
Do you have 1891 and 1901 census to perhaps follow up on her. Janet b1880 in Gateshead. Could possibly find out more through her.

In 1881, Janet the grand daughter is born c 1880 Cockermouth, Cumberland, and it looks like this is her in 1901, closest I could find anyway  Undecided  -

Not sure about this one now, because I've found a Jane Armstrong b.c1876 Cockermouth on 1881 census  Undecided

Although........ this has me baffled, the only marriage I could find (1886 +/- 5 yrs)was a William Bowman to a Jane Anderson, not Armstrong  Undecided

Hello Catherine.
What a lot to think about. Quite a challenge sorting out new names.  Seems like late in life Janet did get married and also widowed soon too. Where on earth did Peter get the name Nicol from??? I do love a challenge and this is certainly one for me. I wondered too if the Tate sugar family could be Tate and Lyle.
Where do I start.  Huh  Oh how often have I asked that in the last few years of chasing other branches of my family  Undecided  and eventually they all seem to fall into place.  Grin
This is super and again thank you for your help and time.

Just caught your latest post. Another red herring. Wow!!!!
Got another marriage never found on another branch of my family and I have been chasing that one for 7 years. No where to be seen. It's as though my gt gt grandfather (on paper) was never born, never married, sired a son and never died but his wife married again a couple of years later.

The only good news is I cant find another Janet with son Peter on the 1881 census (certainly no Peter Nichol), only the one that you know for sure is yours - the Armstrong family  (I didnt check the complete indexes for a marriage, so maybe there is one that would fit)

Maybe Nichol is the name of the father of her children, then she married a Bowman..... will keep looking anyway, I like a challenge too  Smiley

Hello Catherine.
Sounds like the birth of Peter Nicol with mother Jane Armstrong is right. Not married at birth of Peter. I also found the FREEBMD marriage of William Bowman and Jane Anderson in 1889. It is the  right time for a marriage of William and Janet Armstrong. Could the brides name be transcribed wrong do you think?? If it is the right one Janet was widowed after only two years as she is a widow in 1891.  Undecided
