The Rootschat Victorian Photos website is being re-vamped, and has been renamed: The Rootschat Collection of Victorian and Edwardian Photographs I am in the process of scanning and uploading several hundred photos to add to the ones already there. Also, I have re-organised the pics already on the site - now ordered by Photographer's name (if known), with references to photographers' locations (if known). Please visit the site and keep visiting over the next few weeks, as the photos are added. I hope you enjoy your visit, and maybe even find a relative or two!
** NEW ADDRESS AS OF 18 SEP 2008!**

Just got the certs I ordered on the mystery Victorian Photo Album : The Harris Collection:
http://victorian-photos.rootschat.net/page14/page14.html
Mrs Edward Brickell Harris died aged 33 years from Heart disease on 12/3/1866 at ?? Poulner, Ringwood - Husband Edward Harris was a Civil Engineer. Informant Eliza Hearthedge
And Marriage Cert: His name is wrong in Indexes -
Her husband was Edward Brickell Harris of full age Engineer, father David Harris a Leather Merchant. She was Ellen Slater, of full age, daughter of Edward Slater an upholsterer. A witness was Leonard Harris (presumably a brother) and Emily Maple (her best friend?) Married by licence in the Parish Church Hampstead.
I hope that this gives a bit more to go on.

Lovely, Prue...! J.J.
I just went through the Jerome/West album...Noticed the aboriginal (metis?) Mother and child. My husband is a Jerome...There could be relatives in there! Wish I knew who they were, as his Jerome ancestors came from the Northern U.S. and into Canada...( There were MANY sons and many double marriages, so they populated a good deal of Minnesota and North Dakota, and Southern Manitoba & Saskatchewan here in Canada!! haha)
Thanks for all that work...wow...lovely scans...the old tin type must be so delicate to work with....How did you come to aquire these long enough to scan?

Hi JJ
Thanks for the kind words
The Jerome/West album scans were sent to me by Mark Parsons (another Rootschatter) - I have to say I hadn't noticed the fact that the mother and son you mentioned were Canadian aboriginal folk (not being familiar with their appearance) so that is very interesting to know. It would be lovely if you could find a connection to hubby's family...here is the info Mark sent me about the photos:
They all come from an Album presented to G. A. West from F. E. Jerome on Feb 13 1883 and are all believed to be Wests and Jeromes. I have included the photographer/studio in the title of the photo, but I can provide the full address of the photographer of some of them if required. What fascinates me is the geographical spread, especially for that era! Im sure some were added after 1883 but it pretty much covers the whole country plus New York and Canada. All the Aldershot ones are probably Jeromes, thats where the album resides today with John Jerome MBE.
Maybe there is some way of contacting John Jerome MBE, or finding his genealogy online somewhere?
As for all the other pics, they are all in my possession, mostly donated by Jakky, but some of which I've bought at flea markets around the world, or which are ones in my family collection that I have no ID for. The Harris album is mine, too, but I'm hoping that with the research that Tjapaltjarri has done (above) I might one day be able to return it to the family
Glad you're enjoying the site!

Hi everyone,
For reasons best left in the past (software update, loss of template etc.) I have had to update the look of the Rootschat Victorian Photographs website.
I can't find the original thread about it (*), so have started this new one. Hope that's OK, mods
I am in the process of uploading it right now, so give it an hour or so and then please go and have a look at http://victorian-photos.rootschat.net ...and see what you think.
I use a Mac, with RapidWeaver software, and Firefox browser, so I'd be interested to know if others with different OS etc. have any probs.
As usual, I look forward to hearing from ANYONE who might think they have a connection to someone in these lovely old photos

Hi there,
The work I did on trying to identify the people in the Harris collection is at the following chat topic address. Perhaps these could be moved to the new site as well.

Brilliant, Howard! Thanks for finding those. I think I must have very weak powers when it comes to tracking my movements on Rootschat (I think I move around too much!)
I will re-read what you have posted and try to follow up on what I can.
Cheers prue

Great idea, but sadly, it doesn't work properly on my system.
I know I am out of date - but there's a lot of Mac System 9.2.2 users still out there using IE 5.1.7, and the tabs appear all over the place with no names...so if I manage to find anything, it'll be a miracle. I can post up a screenshot if you like, so you can see what I see when I try it

Hi Brambletye, Sorry it doesn't work properly on your system, but I'm not a webpage designer by any stretch of the imagination, so what you see is all you will get, as I use basic templates from a basic software package for dummies, and can't change anything Have you thought about downloading Firefox? I'm sure there's a version that would work with OS9. Prue

Brambletye
There is no easy way to say this, technology has moved on a long way since Mac 9 (released October 1999) & IE 5 (released March 1999). Even the very versatile Firefox will not work on such a system, from the Firefox website:
Due to the lack of developer interest, build machines, compilers and testing resources, the last mozilla.org software built for Mac OS 9 was Mozilla 1.2.1, released in December 2002. However, versions of our software that old are not recommended for security reasons. Therefore, for Mac OS 9 users, mozilla.org recommends iCab - which is, as far as we know, the only graphical browser currently maintained for Mac OS 9.

That's a shame, John - have to say I hadn't realised OS9 was so old! I am on 10.4.9 now, but if my old laptop hadn't died a couple of years ago I might still be on OS9.
Sorry brambletye...maybe iCab mentioned in John's message might be useful though?
