Judy I just had a look at my copy of the Orton parish registers and I cannot find the christening of a Dorothy Hodgson in the period Feb 1739/40 to Aug 1746.
There are the following Orton christenings between Feb 1739/40 and Mar 1742/3: 4 May 1740 Rachel da of Thomas Hodgson of Cocklake 17 Feb 1740/1 Christopher the son of Thomas Hodgson of Edge 25 Nov 1741 Thomas the son of ThomasJohn Hodgson of Tebay 9 Mar 1741/2 Isabel the daughter of Thomas Hodgson of Scarside 10 Dec 1742 Jennet the daughter of Thomas Hodgson of Tebay Gill Edge

Judy The Orton parish register also has:
the marriage of Thomas Hodgson and Isabel Potter on 31 Aug 1740
the marriage of William Hodgson of Kirkby Lonsdale and Elizabeth _arrer of Orton on 28 Nov 1742
the marriage of William Hodgson of Scarside and Anne Noble of Borrowbridge both of Orton on 29 Mar 1744
the burial of Thomas Hodgson of Scarside, aged 21, small pox on 18 Mar 1742/3 (*)
(*) there is also the christening of Thomas the son of Thomas Hodgson of Bousfell on 11 Jan 1721/2 which I assume is a match.
Do you think there is a possibility that Dorothy is 10 years younger than you think? - that would remove any problems with the christening of that last child and she would still be old enough to marry in 1771. My extract of the Orton parish register doesn't get as far as 1750 so I can't refute or confirm.
regards Deborah

Judy From the restricted periods I have covering Orton:
18th of a month between Sep and Dec 1717 [__] Hodgson and Mary Hanson marry (*)
(*) I'm sorry but I cannot read the month or the man's name on my copy. It may be clearer on the original.
There is also a Hodgson/Nicholson marriage in CR - a John Hodgson is christened in 1797 to John H and Dorothy N. regards Deborah

Came across your posting today. My wife's family name (paternal) is Nicholson or Nickolson. I have traced them back into Beetham and also into Morecambe. There are many Nick's in these areas!! Maybe helpful, I hope so!!
