Topic: Bankruptcy 1867.Frustrated to say the least. (Read 157 times)

Please can anyone help me find bankruptcy records for 1867 for my great great grandfather..Chester library suggested I E mail Wirral records , and I E Mailed them 3 times over the last 4 months .Twice they didn't reply and the third time they said they held some records for 1867, and would reply asap, but never did. I have one small entry in the London Times which states "To surrender to the Country.PCStortz photographer, Claughton and Manchester May 28th." Manchester records did one free search of local paper, but found nothing. In 1866 he was living at 88 Claughton Road, Birkenhead and in 1867 was in either Salford or Manchester around Chorlton on Medlock.
Any suggestions very welcome

You mention an entry in the London papers,what about something in the local paper of the time? Not sure if bankruptcy was big news in 1867 
If you are any where near Colindale in North London the newspaper library hold all the old papers dating back from the 1700's.
I needed some info in Leicester back to 1833,so google searched for the newspaper of the right area and emailed them.
A very nice man in their acrchive dept did a look up for me and even posted me a copy of the article.If you don't ask you wont know if someone would do the same for you 
Would he have gone to jail for it back then?
If so National Archives at Kew holds records of people who were in jail.

Thanks Carol,
I would think that some details of the bankruptcy hearing would have been reported if only briefly, or so I have been told.I am interested in why he went bankrupt, and who he owed money too, so I will do as you suggest, and see if I can find date of actual hearing, as I think it goes through several stages (can anyone help here please) and then I will search newspaper reports.

Is this your Stortz family in 1871,in Bridge St Chorlton with Isabella born Belgium as the head? It says married not widowed but hubby is not there.
Have you found him in 1871,or does that mean he could have been in jail?
Sorry to haro on about it ,but recently found one of mine in Holloway in 1881 and am hoping to find out why soon!

Hello Carol.
Yes the family on Bridge street on the 1871 census is correct, but I am wondering if it is transcribed incorrectly, as It gives Isabellas occupation as artist, but it was Philip who was an artist, and photographer.The two children who are down as N.K. are my great grand Ida, and a child born in 1866 in a Manchester workhouse, who I can find no trace of.
I suppose Philip could have been in Jail, but he did open up a photography business in 1869 on Oxford Road in Manchester and was an informant on his sons death certificate in 1867
I can find no other trace of Philip on the 1871 census, and have tried all spellings. In 1873 he is either married , or living with a lady called Margaret Stortz with who he has 2 children, but again can find no details of a marriage.
They are a very perplexing family, but I shall plough on.On 1881 census Philip is in Middlesex, as widower name mis transcribed as Horley!
I think my best bet is as you suggest, contact British Library, and see what newspapers they hold, for around May to July 1867, and hope the hearing falls between those dates.

I've come across these deaths...Interesting that you mention a child born in 1866- here's some that died then.Maybe that's what tipped Philip over the edge and he couldn't cope with running the business?

Hi Carol,
Yes it all looks like his family, as his 2 daughters did die in 1866,and he lost 4 more later on. the family started off with so much hope as many immigrants do, and for a while it was very good.The baby called Philip Christian must be his Grandson, as his son Camile had twins in 1888, and the boy died when he was about a month old.
I shall get there in the end I'm sure, so thankyou for all your interest.
