Ross-on-Wye Herefordshire - Alfred John Wood
« on: Wednesday 16 May 07 16:23 BST (UK) »

Hello Folks....I am new here so hope I don't do anything wrong!   I have tried and tried to find my Grandfather but without success, even though I have quite a bit of information.  His name was Alfred John Wood, born 1878 in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire.  He died in Richmond, Surrey in 1940.  His wife was Amy nee Ford and they married in Bridgend, Glamorgan in 1905.  His mothers name was Elizabeth nee Williams.    I hope this is of help to you.   I don't know what other information you may need.   Thankyou....

Welcome to the site.

Have you got your dates correct?
The only marriage I can find is
Mar qtr 1915
Bridgend
Alfred J Wood
Ann Ford
Volume 11a Page 1340

I can find no birth reg 1878 for Alfred John Wood

Do you have any of these certs???

(don't think you have done anything wrong -your post is good -plenty of information - you'll get used to being asked questions!!!!)

The only death I have found in 1940 Surrey is
FreeBMD
Alfred J Wood
Age 55
Mar qtr 1940
Surrey NE
2a 290

which (if this is him) would make his d.o.b. different to 1878

Is it possible your dates are out.

Where did you get the information from???

Hi Newfy......you will have to bear with me on this one....the certificate is so old, its breaking up and is very brown with age.....so i will have to put down here as much as I can read!!!

MARRIAGE SOLEMNISED AT THE REGISTRY OFFICE IN THE DISTRICT OF BRIDGEND, IN THE COUNTY OF GLAMORGAN.

FEBRUARY 1905 -

ALFRED JOHN WOOD - AGED 27 - BATCHELOR - COLLIERY REPAIRS? - 1, WYNAHAU STREET ? -CAERAU
- WILLIAM LEIGHTON WOOD (father)

AMY FORD - AGED 21 (but think she was only 18) - SPINSTER - NO OCC.LISTED - SAME ADDRESS - AMOS FORD (father) DECEASED.

WITNESSES WERE:     JESSIE ? (SURNAME UNREADABLE) AND THERESA ? (SURNAME UNREADABLE)

I hope this helps you, but this certificate really is in a bad way!!!

On the 1891 census there is an Alfred J Wood in Newent Glos [not that far from Ross] aged 4, with parents Albert and Mary A E.
He is on the 1901 census still in Newent aged 14 as just Alfred.
Only other candidate, but date of death conflicts here, is Alfred A Wood aged 9 son of George and Emma Wood, a tailor in Ross on Wye on the 1881 census.

Do you have any sibling names to confirm if either of these are your Alfred ?

Thanks EBN for your reply.....but this is so confusing.    My Grandfathers children were:

EVELYN AMY           -              BORN 1920
FLORENCE VIOLET     -          BORN 1910
ALFRED JOHN             -          BORN 1915 or 1917
ELIZABETH                            UNKNOWN
MARGARET ROSE                   UNKNOWN
CYRIL                                    UNKNOWN
WILLIAM              -       HE DIED AT AGE OF 1 YEAR.

but I do not know names of siblings I am afraid.

I really think the 1915 marriage is a very strong possibility to be the marriage of your grandparents- if the certificate is in a bad state, it could be easy to mistake 1915 for 1905.

If the 1915 marriage is theirs that would make the d.o.b. differ by 10 years-anfd i have found in 1901 Amy Ford age 2-father Amos

and Alfred J Wood age 7 father William Layton Wood mother Elizabeth

William Layton Wood is not a common name
Possibly this could be them
I'll see if I can find deaths of Amos and William Leighton (layton) pre 1905 or 1915

I have found a deth of Amos Ford of an age which fits with the Amos on 1891 census

Mar qtr
Pontypridd
Amos Ford
age 63
11a 804

as Amos died before the marriage of his daughter, it leads once again to thinking the marriage was 1915.

You could check with the Register Office if the marriage took place in 1905 or 1915, I think they will confirm the year over the phone without you having to get a replacemnet certificate.

The other confusing thing is the birth of Florence Violet in 1910 - is this accurate ?
