DUNSTAN Family
« on: Sunday 13 May 07 02:36 BST (UK) »

Any information on a Francis Dunstan who married a Jane Gribble approx 1840 & had a son James approx 1844. James went to Melbourne, Australia & married a Emily Johns, 2/9/1868,  also from Cornwall. They moved to New Zealand, one of their children was Clara. Love to hear from anyone who may have connections, thank you.

Hello Christine & welcome to RootsChat

You may be lucky and find some folks with connections to your James online, but there are many resources available to help you find information without finding relatives. It is a good idea to indicate what you are hoping to find
e.g. his ancestors in Cornwall - any siblings? when his parents died etc.  A quick search of the Census finds James and his parents in 1851 in Wendron (which is where my cornwall folks came from  Smiley )

HO107/1912 307/20 1851 Wendron Cornwall
Francis Dunstan head mar 33 copper miner born Camborne (looks like Lamborne but the IGI says differently  Smiley )
Jane wife mar 33 born Camborne
Wilham son 11 at home do
Grace daur 9  do   do do
James son 6   do   do do
Jane daur 2   do   do do

I have found the IGI very good for Cornwall & this is probably the baptism of Francis
10 DEC 1814 Camborne, Cornwall, England parents Francis and Temperance

Much of the Cornwall census is available at no charge on FreeCen
http://www.freecen.org.uk/

The IGI is very slow at the minute - but well worth searching for Cornwall families

If you are looking for more information, do please ask & good luck with the searching
(I didn't easily find the family after 1851 - Do you know if they all came to Australia?)

Hi Christine,

Welcome to RootsChat  Grin

Be sure to have a good look at the Camborne site. Francis's marriage is listed in 1839. (Jane is listed as Jenifer - You will find Jane and Jenifer are interchangeable names)

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~camborneopc/

Looks like Jenefer baptised 1815  Wink

It is a very good site. I am sure you will find much of interest.

Hi Trish & Kris,
After James married Emily in Melbourne they then came to NZ in 1869. I was able to trace Emily's arrival 2 days before they were married in 1868 but there is no record that I could find at the Victoria Records Office of how James got there & when. It appears they went by themselves.
Thank you for your replies, Christine

Could either of you give me any idea how I would trace how James  Dunstan got to Australia & when. The last  England census he was on is 1861. He is shown as living with his father Francis & mother Jane, the surname is spelt Dunstone in this census?  He must have arrived in Australia sometime prior to september 1868.
Any help would be mush appreciated, thank you, Christine

Hi Christine

Have a look at the shipping and state links at the top of the Australian board

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,165.0.html

If you can't find him on the Victorian immigrants list, many of the Vic immigrants came via South Australia
(about which I know little)

It could be worth a separate query on the above board

Hi Toni

It is a little late for convicts - unless he went to WA - that was the only state taking convicts at this time. They are all mentioned here
http://www.convictcentral.com/  - I don't think James is among them.
