Son of a Woolwich militia man
« on: Tuesday 15 May 07 16:02 BST (UK) »

William Church was born in Woolwich c1809, son of militiaman William Church and his wife Susan(nah).  William snr and Susan came from Godmanchester, Hunts. (There is a thread about the family on the Beds page under "William Church & Mary Ambridge", by the way.) The family later returned to Godmanchester, though William junior later moved to Beds.

Can anyone please suggest where I might look for a baptism record for young William?  Would there have been a garrison church, perhaps?  Which Record Office would I write to? I haven't been able to establish whether William snr was in the Royal Artillery, but would imagine so.

Looking at Genuki, it seems that two garrison churches were built in Woolwich in the mid-1850s, so too late for William Church's baptism c1809.  The only church remaining today of an appropriate age would be St Mary Magdelene, which apparently has records dating from the 17th century onwards.

Woolwich would at that time have been in Kent.  Any suggestions, please, as to which authority I should apply for details of a potential baptism there?  Better still, is anyone able to look up this record for me?

Grateful for any help  Huh
