Gallett mystery
« on: Wednesday 16 May 07 23:38 BST (UK) »

Help!

I'm looking for Alfred Stanley Gallett. He was born abt.1863 in England, appears in the 1891 & 1901 Scottish censuses with his family, and later emigrated to the USA. He marrried Mary Ann Catherine Griffiths Ravenill Hodge, also born in England, in 1885 in Ross. Their first son James Alfred was born in Ross, Herefordshire in 1886, although subsequent children were born in Scotland.

But I can find nothing on earlier censuses for Alfred Stanley, and although the BVRI gives his father as Alfred James Gallett there's no trace of him, either.

Between 1851 & 1870 I can find only one birth record for an Alfred Gallett: the 3rd quarter of 1863 in Upton. The Galletts were concentrated around Upton on Severn, mostly at Hanley Castle and not too far from Ross so this is a possibility, but if so, why no other records?

Any suggestions will be welcome!

I'd say it's most likely a mistranscription of the surname. Have you looked at any original records? Do you have the marriage certificate from Ross?

Hi Netti & EBN

Mistranscription is quite possible - the 'a' becomes 'u' or 'i' very easily. I have tried various Ancestry searches, including a quick-ish scan of every Alfred b. abt 1863 on Ancestry's 1871 & 1881 censuses, but nothing obvious has leapt out at me so far.

I don't have their marriage certificate, this info is from the BVRI which is helpful in giving both fathers' names, and Mary Ann's many names. The Scottish census records have not given an occupation either.

I would recommend that you get the marriage certificate from
Ross on Wye Register Office
The Old Chapel
Cantilupe Street
Ross on Wye
Heefordshire

This could give other important clues to this mystery

Hi EBN and Toni

The marriage certificate is a good idea, as it seems to be about the only concrete bit of info. at present. It's interesting that I can't identify Mary Ann under her maiden name on the 1871 or 1881 census either, and the certificate may give some useful details that will help here too.

I have a note of Alfred's birth registration in Upton, and as this is the only Alfred born around this time it may well be him. I have also found a birth registration for James John G R Hodge in Upton in 1872, and given that these are the same names as Mary Ann's father this may be her brother and help establish a link to Upton.

Thanks very much for these suggestions,

Nick

Hi Hepburn

It could be. I also wonder whether it's significant their their first son was named James Alfred & if this suggests Alfred Stanley's father was known as James rather than Alfred.

I guess the problem with these brick walls is that you can start clutching at any old straws!

Just a thought...Do you think it possible that Alfreds father could be using his middle name of James ?

In 1861 There is a James Gallett 22 b Hanley Castle who is a Soldier at Horfield Barracks in Gloucestershire.

Hi Jane

No, this James is my Gt-Grandfather who served as a soldier and married late in life when an army (Chelsea) pensioner. There is another James, born at Hanley Castle in 1843 but I'm sure it's not him either.

Thanks,

A thought - in 1881 could Alfred also have been in the army or navy ?
Was he not heer for the Census, but hat still does not account for his absnece on the 1871 Census Sad

Do need  the occupation on the Marriage Certificate.  Policeman is a thought I have from somewhere but cannot think why.

Hi EBN

Thanks for these suggestions; being away in the services could account for his absence in 1881. He would have been aged 17 or 18 in 1881, probably just about old enough for the army, although maybe too young to be a policeman?

I have been through the Ancestry 1871 & 1881 censuses looking for Alfred Stanley or his father - in fact, any Alfred, Alf, Fred, James or Stanley etc. that might be a possible, but can't see any likely candidates.

Other bits of info that have turned up: When he emigrated to the US in 1916 he gave his place of birth as Hanley Castle (that's Upton on Severn), and I'm told that on his marriage certificate his father's occupation was shown as gardener.

I have now traced his wife Mary and her family in case that helped, but no real clues there.

Another wild guess is that he and his father travelled to the US, then returned, leaving Alfred Stanley with the idea of emigrating later in life. However although other Galletts from Hanley Castle emigrated to the US in the early 1800s, I have nothing to back this one up.

Cheers

Nick

A possible for the Alfred Gallett whose birth was registered in Upton registration district in 1863 (Upton registration district is in Worcestershire and includes Hanley Castle)

1871 census RG10 3055 folio 65
Callow End Powick  Worcestershire
Francis Cubberley 50 Hanley Castle, Worcestershire, Head Married Labourer
Mary Cubberley  31 Hanley Castle, Worcestershire, Wife Married Dressmaker
Alfred Cubberley 7  Hanley Castle, Worcestershire,  Son
Francis Cubberley 5mths  Powick, Worcestershire, Son

Marriages Dec 1869
CUBBERLEY  Francis    Upton  6c 561
Gallett  Mary     Upton  6c 561

1881 census RG11 2921 folio 28
Callow End Powick  Worcestershire
Mary Cubberley  41 Hanleycastle, Worcestershire,  Head Widow Dressmaker
Fredk. Cubberley 17 Hanleycastle, Worcestershire, Son Shoemaker
Frank Cubberley 10 Powick, Worcestershire,  Son
Alfred Jones 28 Worcestershire, Lodger Married Shoemaker
Sophia Jones  31 Hanley Castle, Worcestershire, Wife of Lodger Married
Walter Jones  3 Middlesex, Son

No sign of the Jones family after 1881 and no obvious marriage for them as Jones, Cubberley or Gallett pre 1881.

I believe from the Scottish censuses Alfred S. Gallett was a boot and shoe finisher? He also named his son born circa 1896 Francis which may or may not be significant.

The Alfred Gallett born circa 1863 (aged 53) in England who arrived on the ship California in New York 25th September 1916 was a boot finisher. His address was 7 Kimberley Buildings Carnoustie Scotland. Next of kin his wife Mary.

Illegitmate people on marriages often show no indication that they are illegitimate. Their father's names can be complete fabrication.
