No-one (as far as I can see) is thinking of deleting members who log on regularily or currently. There are many members who joined in 2004 & the last time they logged on was the day they joined. These are the main folks being discussed.
There are 31 users with Trish in their user name. 4 of them have made more than 100 posts. 14 have made no posts. The remainder have made 1 to 30 posts and some of these folks are current active users. No-one wants to delete them.
The name I originally wanted was taken 1 Aug 2004. The user has made no posts and was last online 1 Jul 2005. For Trish's who joined 2004/2005 - 10 did not return after 2 weeks. I think they could be culled.
If you left family history for many months/years there is nothing stopping you rejoining when you return.

PS According to Trystan PMs don't use resources David - we did ask - there is a thread discussing same somewhere. The photos/avatars do use resources. The email system is apparently also a big user - It could be turned off - using the "show replies" works well.

And stop them being able to learn as "lurkers"?
I still think that it would not help resources, but do think behindthefrogs ideas might be better!

Hi everyone
I would think that quite a lot of people register on this site without actually realising what sort of site it is. Lots of folks who are new to genealogy find lots of info out there on the web and register with every site they can find....but not everyone likes chat sites so maybe this is why some register and never log on again. These folks wouldn't even know if they've been culled.
Then there are people like me who only use the site seldomly. My reason? Well it's because I'm busy working or looking after a family and when I do have precious free time a lot of it is spent looking at historical documents. So there's not an awful lot of time to chat. I also believe that if you are helped on this site then you should try to give something back in return and for this reason I try to keep look up requests, for instance, to a minimum. Bear in mind that there are lots of apparently active members on this site who's contributions are limited to "look up request for..."
I think that RC is a great site to learn from and if "lurking" enables someone to learn then that's a good thing isn't it - surely not a reason to kick someone out.
This is only my 70th post but it doesn't mean I'm inexperienced - I've been researching for about 20 years and I'm on the committee of my local FHS.
So please - cull those who have never posted but leave the rest of us to enjoy the site.

There are some folks who have only posted a dozen times, but log on regularily, no-one wants to cull them. I think maybe there is some confusion as to what stats are available. RC always records the last time you were online - so that is a much better indicator as to use of the site than number of posts. There are folks who have never posted that probably log on every day/week, I know my husband belongs to a couple of photo forums and he NEVER posts, but he logs on almost every day. He would be rightly upset if he got culled, as would any of us who log on regularily, whether we post or not.
The only suggestion that I have seen, is to remove members who don't access the site AT ALL - whether they post or not is not an issue.
I don't think it really matters, but I do think it will make a mess of the guessing competitions  if members are removed while they are in progress!

Excuse me for butting in I will be brief as am poorly at moment.
People here have specificaly called for culling (killing off) peope who do not post for a length of time.
I have only been member since January this year and have, except during my regular spells in Medical facilities, have been into the chat room at least once a day. I have however only posted a few times like this when people want to take a big stick to some people or parts of our wondeful community. I have also seen people on the boards who answer a multi part question with an answer with each part in a sepereate post and a continual variety of thank you's on a post. These seem to be an acceptable practice to increase your rating. WHO is the biggest culprit for clogging the system. The person that registers and uses but seldom posts or the person inflating his or her post count to no purpose other than vanity.
It seems to me that over the recent month or two an elliment in the RC community are trying to destroy piece by piece this wonderful site.
Please be VERY careful who you send to the gillotine, do not bother about me do not think I shall last many years but have stated in my will that I should be resigned.
