Inns in Chelmondiston - late 1700s

Could someone tell me the names of the inns which would have been in existence in the late 1700's in Chelmondiston?  I am looking for Leonard Nunn who was a inn-keeper.

Description
The role of this 16th century pub on the eerie Suffolk coast has always been to provide sustenance for the local bargees and rivermen whose thirst for beer is near legendary. Today, with its character still thankfully intact, the Butt and Oyster is a favourite haunt of locals, tourists and yachtsmen. A mixture of seafood and traditional dishes characterises the menu, including toad in the hole, steak and kidney pie and scampi and chips.

I haven't been to Chelmondiston yet but I know my roots are there....

You might already know this as these are Chelmondiston Pubs which existed recently.

The Forresters Arms and Red Lion.

Sorry if you did, might be useful if you didn't.

Butt & Oyster still very popular pub with lot of local historians having info on it.

Dear Esther,

Found a useful website for Chelmondiston census records as below:-

From 1841 and no nunn's i'm afraid. However it does show two pubs in Chelmondiston area in 1841.
1. Butt and Oyster, Pin mill landlord- James Curtis
2. Lion Inn, The Street -landlord - Charles Double.

the 1000 dollar question is, was the Lion in existence in 1700.

Might help, might not, but can't harm.

Dear Esther,

I thought I'd check one of the sites i use as below:-

If you go to List of Surnames you will find a lot of people who have info on Nunn's in Suffolk. One has information on Nunn's from Holbrook and I think Driver's who were in Chelmondiston. Wonder if their is a tie up and she has info which would help you.

When I used this facility for my Reynolds ancestors I got a lot of help.

Have also found a Charlotte Nunn marrying a Thomas Horn on 21/11/1819 in Chelmondiston.
Susannah Nunn marrying a Thomas Linley on 15/5/1826 in Chelmondiston.

Again, Don't know whether useful but you never know.

Hi Terry,
I have had a look at the site you mentioned and was impressed with the amount of info it contained. However, I can't see any of the Nunns which are relevant to me. Most of the members of the Nunn family went to Essex and the only one remaining in Suffolk was Leonard at Chelmondiston. ( As far as Essex research is concerned, the Nunn name is so common that they might as well have been named Smith!!!)
My next project is to track down the Universal Directory of Great Britain. I think it has info dating back to the 1700's.  Knowing my luck, it doesn't cover Suffolk. Something will turn up.
