Hallo, I am going round in circles. I have the marriage of Benjamin John Jury b. 1821 in Sheerness to Mary Ann Hunt b. c. 1827 in Kent, in Dec 1848 in East Wickham /Kent.
At the time of marriage Benjamin was resident "In the Parish of Holy Trinity in Cambridge".
As he is a soldier, would anyone be able to help me find out in which regiment he was serving. I cannot find the couple in the 1851 Census (nor Benjamin in the 1841 Census) and have just looked at the site for Cambridge regiments - without success.
In the 1861 Census he is a "Chelsea pensioner" but I cannot seem to find anything about names of pensioners on the Chelsea Pensioners site not can I find anything on the National Archives site.
Would appreciate any help on this.
Thank you Vivien

Hello Vivien I see what you mean about going round in circles i have been round and back again I thought i would try and find where/if there were any Chelsea Pensioner records anywhere which you will need to find before you can find the regiment. Cant remember that subject coming up anywhere before but the Armed forces topic might know more. Found these that might be helpfull in the meantime if you can contact them. It wont let me put the links on so type in The Royal Hospital Chelsea that will have the museum page as well i hope

There's a fairly comprehensive post in response to a similar question on http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/SFHG/2003-12/1071227251
As I can't see him in WO97 on the TNA site it seems he was probably discharged after 1854 in which you have to search at Kew to find his regiment and get copies of his discharge papers etc.
See also http://www.history.uk.com/genealogy/index.php?archive=12
It doesn't look as though there's an easy online way to find what you're looking for

Hallo Celia and David,
Thank you both for your posts. Celia - I am not getting anywhere on the Chelsea Pensions page at all and have put the same sort of question on other posts. David - I think you are right in that I will not be able to find anything online about his regiment. A real pity as I live on the continent and do not come over too offen. Still, have to make it my first priority on my next visit. Will try both of your links too. Thanks again to both of you for your help and efforts with this problem.

Hallo David,
I am not sure if this will help me, but Benjamins first child was born, according to the 1861 Census, in Sandhurst, Berks in 1853, and his second child was born in Winchester, Hampshire in c. 1857
Would this give anyone a clue as to which regiment he could have been in?

I am re-using this topic as I have more information about Benjamin Jury.
According to his daughter's birth cert. his occupation was Private in 31st Regiment and they were living in Winchester at the time (1857).
Would this be the said "Buffs"?

The 31st (Huntingdonshire) and 70th Regiments merged in 1881 to form the East Surrey regiment. In 1750 the 31st were nicknamed the Young Buffs, as opposed to the Buffs who were the 3rd, East Kent Regiment.
So the 31st and the Buffs are consistent
See http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Regiments/31stRegimentofFoot.html for a timeline of where the regiment was serving.

Hi Margaret,
thanks for that information - the only thing is I live on the continent, so do not have much opportunity to visit these places. When I come over, it is mostly to visit family - although I do try to get a look at the National Archives in Kew now and again. If I do manage to get a bit more information about Benjamin, I think it looks as if I should take a trip up to SW3. Have to get my Mum on to that and see exactly where it is. Say "Hi" to our Church the next time you pass . I was christened there.
David: thanks for your post. That is also what I am looking for. Benjamin's children were born in various places and I suppose that is where the Regiment was stationed. I know he was a Chelsea Pensioner as according to the 1861 Census, but can not find and records in the Archives at the moment.
