LOGAN from Co. Mayo
« on: Wednesday 16 May 07 14:51 UTC (UK) »

The amount of work done on the Leitrim and Roscommon census deserves congratulation!.  I believe that my paternal grand dad,  Bernard Logan came from Mayo.  He was born circa. 1870 and died in Manchester in 1956.  He was married to Margaret Loftus (Mayo family,  she was from Bolton,  born 1884).  I understand that he had a famial connection in the Leeds area of Yorks.  Trying to locate his family is like platting fog,  though I found an interesting possibility in Leo townland,  in the civil parish if Annagh,  in the barony of Costello,  in the county of Mayo.  That's as far as it goes.  Ring any bells with my Rootschat pals?

Hello,
when did Bernard arrive in England. He does not appear in 1901 for England- only 4 are shown and do not apply.
I checked 1901 on Leitrim Roscommon, which as you say is brilliant so far as is transcribed and found the family you refer to but no Bernard is there.
If Bernard is born 1870 (after 1865) he would be in the Birth indexes for Ireland but if there were others of the same name, it may be difficult to obtain a certificate.
Sorry I have not given much info- just wondering where he is in 1901.

best wishes

Dear Heywood,
As a matter of interest am I communicating with a lady called Teresa!!
The nom de plume leads me to that conclusion!  If not many thanks for your efforts re. my grand dad.   Obfuscation hardly describes his arrival in England!!

Hi Bill,
no I'm not Teresa but rather like Mayo (my dad came from there).

I have seen the Leo entry for Logan and a couple of others in Griffiths Valuation. If Leo was the one the church would be Ballyhaunis but I can't find any online records. You could order microfilms probably at a LDS family history library to view.
Also on this site it has been mentioned that familyulster http://www.familyulster.com/ will search the indexes - you only get the reference number for about £1 per year of search.

Dear Heywood,

I want to send a special thank you for the info. re. Leo etc.  I will pursue it as far as possible.   Most times (Uncles etc) I have no problem finding,  but this old lad is proving to be something of a Scarlet (or Green!) Pimpernel.  I will,  keep you up to date.

Again,  Thanks!!

Dear maryderry,
thanks you for the info. re. Loughan and loghan.  I did think at one time that the GANNON connection was grandads family,  but this ran into the sand by a process of elimination on LDS.   Looking at grandads marriage cert. his father is given as Patrick LOGAN which is how I got to the LEO place in Mayo.  My real problem is that the family believe he was from Mayo,  but no real evidence to confirm that.  His wife (Margaret) was definitely from a Mayo family.  His last remaining daughter (80 yrs.) says he came from Mayo,  but that is the only info. she has,  which is rather sad.  I am very grateful for my Rootschat pals to show an interest.  Keep on truckin'

Hello again,
I didn't realise that you have a dad's name - I would go for a search for Bernard Logan c 1870 with a father Patrick - http://www.groireland.ie/ I think they will search a couple of years either side.

Hi,
I think we are cousins (of some sort). I am the grandchild of Bernard LOGAN and Margaret Loftus.
I have been unable to find anything on Bernard until today, when I obtained a transcript from the 1911 Census. It lists Bernard (mis spelt as Leonard) Logan age: 34, Occupation: Harvy Labourer (whatever that is), Born: Ballingham Co Mayo Ireland.
His wife is Margaret age: 27, born: Bolton, Lancs,
Ch: Margaret Mary 6yrs, Thomas 4yrs, Bernard 2 yrs, William Patrick 0 yrs.
I then got into "Co. Mayo" and subsequently found your message.
I'm assuming the person you got some info. from is my Auntie Eileen.
My mother was Ellen. I was unaware of the earlier children until recently. I only knew from Catherine (Kitty) down.
It may be possible to now exchange whatever information we have and join forces?
Kind Regards Ellenc
