Hi Libby,

Welcome to Rootschat.

The Qualter name seems to be almost exclusive to Co Galway with just a few occurences in Mayo.

In Griffiths Valuation 1847-64 there are three James Qualters listed, all in Galway and the townlands are:

Tonagarraun, in the parish of Annaghdown
Cloondergan, in the parish of Dunmore
Tirboy, in the parish of Tuam

Do any of these placenames mean anything to you?

Dear Ronnieg,
thank you so much for the Qualter information- unfortuately, i don't have a way of pinning
down which of the three is most likely. I really appreciate your efforts, though and I will
keep searching
Thanks

Dear Libby
Don't know if you are still seeking information on Sabina Qualter / James Hughes but I have come across a Sabina Qualter acting as a sponsor at the Baptism of Patrick Qualter in Lackagh Parish Co. Galway.
Patrick was the son of John Qualter and Mary Ford from Liscananaun Townland in Lackagh. Witnesses at their wedding were Martin and Winifred Qualter, possible siblings.
Our branch comes from the same Townland and are probably related but I have no records for the period so cannot say for sure. If this Sabina is the mother of Sabina and James Hughes remember they were born during the famine years when many families were dispossed and registration chaotic.

Civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages didn't start until 1864- well after the Famine.

Thank you. I am quite well aware of that fact. I was referring to church records.

Yes I am still  searching for the Qualters- Sabina and James. I really think your information is
promising. I am not sure if Winifred is a common name in that part of Ireland, but the daughter of
sabina qualter desmond was names Catherine Winifred Desmond- certainly sounds like a clue
I would love to find a way to find out if Sabina and james' parents both died of typhoid fever abt 1854
( as Catherine Winifred mentioned on an insurance application)- Thank you so much for your  input
I feel like I am zeroing in on the right area.

Dear Libby
I have gone through the Qualter BIRTHS AND MARRIAGES I have come across doing that branch of my family. They seem to have been the Mc Qualters who started off around Tuam, moving down to Dunmore into Lackagh Parish, with our lot moving c1850 to Claregalway Parish just a few miles down the road.
I have collated information on any Qualters I have come across on my search, some I have authenticated via aged Aunts, and records, others are, like yours, awaiting pieces of a jigsaw to fall into place.

Luckily there are not many Sabina Qualters 'tho Sabina was a common christian name. There a quite a few Winifred's and the usual Bridget's, Catherine's, Julia's and Mary's; the son's being James, John, Martin, Michael, Patrick, Thomas, and William.

The Sabina Qualter I have come across only appears as a sponsor at the baptism of one of the children of a John Qualter / Mary Ford in Lackagh. If the other sponsors Martin and Winifred are siblings, or cousins, you may come across some more information on the Lackagh Genealogy and History site.
I have not pursued this branch because I have been unable to establish a link, however I noted that a Martin Qualter in Lackagh married twice and all his children emigrated to Woburn MA. USA. There is a tree on Family Tree Makers site under the name of Mary E O'Doherty - Murray. It might be worth a look.

Found no church record for the death of a Sabina or Michael Hughes c1854.
Hope some of this proves useful.

Dear Nipy
That is an extremely generous offer. I have quite a few Qualter Family records sweeping down from Tuam, through Lackagh into Claregalway so I would  be happy to swop information.
My branch arrived in Claregalway via Liscananaun in Lackagh, pre 1855 when the GV for the area was completed.

Dear Nipy
I  would be very grateful if you  would check for a James and Sabina Hughes whose children are
James and Sabina b 1848 and 1843 respectively. One US record states that the parents, James
& Sabina died of typhoid fever in Ireland. I have not been able to confirm that. Thanks again
