Thought I would run this by you all as it pertains to this thread.
My Mom died 2 years ago in England (my homeland) and because of the short notice for the funeral, my children were unable to get away from their jobs here in the USA to attend.
I took my camera and took several pictures of the coffin, the flowers, the attendees in order that I could share the ceremony with my children. I could tell that the funeral director was mortified (excuse the pun) and I felt very uncomfortable. Was I wrong to want those pictures?.....I have since heard that "In England, it just isn't done."
Hi Indi !
I think it's becoming more acceptable to do it in England these days regarding adults ! but as far as I know it's always been acceptable for children .... some people would take their children to the park ...... because that's where they liked to play !
Like a lot of other customs we tend to go with the politically correct these days ..... and what other people think !
Think about all the wakes .... complete strangers would wander in and out of the house to view the body but these days .... it's just not done !
To get back to your question Indi ... I don't think you were out of line .... it's your Mum and if your family wants be a part of the celebration of her life ..... and it brings them comfort ..... then it's nobody else's affair !

Darling Lizzie
|
I certainly do not wish to up-set any one by what I wish to add.
When our darling Grand-daughter Phoebe Elizabeth Hall died my son had a picture taken of her not long after she fell asleep forever.
It is one sadly that although is in my procession is one that I can not look at.
We were also given Phoebe's hand/foot prints which I keep with all her special memories.
If it had not been for the wonderful nurses who helped my son/daughter-in-law and younger son at the hospital deal with their grief that day by giving them these items who knows how they would have dealt with their loss.
They were all many miles away from us and it was sudden.
Tomorrow for many is Valentine's Day, a day of loving, for us it Phoebe's special day.
Phoebe Elizabeth Hall 1998 -14th February 1999.
If what I have written up-sets any one please ask me to remove it.
