Two marriages in Surrey, if he is born in Dunsfold as 1851 suggests:

1817 Albury - Mary Hatfield
or
1821 Godalming - Ann Denyer

I'm not that sure how close either of them are to Dunsfold

Kerry

In case you don't know the area.....

Godalming is the larger town - Albury a village, the first about 5/6 miles from Dunsfold, Albury a wee bit north west of Godalming, 3 miles or so.

JAMES VULER
Christening:  31 MAR 1816   Kirdford, Sussex
Father:  JAMES VULER
Mother:  HANNAH

FREDERICK VALLER
Christening:  07 FEB 1819   Kirdford, Sussex
Father:  JAMES VALLER
Mother:  HANNAH

Kirdford and Wisborough are adjacent parishes. That would put a first marriage for James to Hannah in 1811 in Kirdford plus 2 children baptised in Kirdford and 2 children baptised in Wisborough, followed by William's late baptism (perhaps his birth caused the death of Hannah - Wisborough burial records would confirm Hannah's burial - James married Ann Wood as a widower, see Kerry's previous information) William's 'late' baptism was on the same day as his half brother Darcey.

For James to have married in 1811 he would have to have been born by at least circa 1790 so the candidate on the 1841 and 1851 censuses is a strong possibility, particularly since he has a son William with him in 1841 of the right age.

Ann Wood(s) baptism

ANN WOODS
Birth:  16 DEC 1802
Christening:  20 FEB 1803   Wisborough Green, Sussex
Father:  WM WOODS
Mother:  ANN

1841 census HO107 1122/9 folio 37
Brighthelmstone Sussex
James Valler 45  Born Sussex Shoemaker
Elizth Valler 36  Born Sussex
William Valler 15 Born Sussex
Thos Woolridge 10 Born Sussex
William Woolridge 8 Born Sussex

Confirms the marriage Kerry found, the 1851 census in Hove and James death registration in 1853 provided by kerry.

Lewes St Thomas Cliffe, East Sussex
James Valler and Elizabeth Wooldridge married on 15 December 1835
both of this parish and by Banns

The Yes No born in or out of county on the 1841 census is not reliable.

Deaths Mar 1857
Valler  Elizabeth     Steyning  2b 146

JAMES VALLER
Christening:  27 DEC 1789   Dunsfold, Surrey
Father:  JOHN VALLER

LIDIA VALLER
Christening:  20 NOV 1785   Dunsfold, Surrey
Father:  JOHN VALLER

JOHN VALLER
Christening:  19 AUG 1787   Dunsfold, Surrey

HENRY VALLER
Christening:  02 SEP 1792   Dunsfold, Surrey

MARY VALLER

SARAH VALLER
Christening:  09 DEC 1798   Dunsfold, Surrey

Here's an interesting coincidence......I just love these kind of 'finds'

If Elizabeth Goble has anything at all to do with William Valler then I found it quite interesting that an Elizabeth Goble of the right age from the right area, was a servant in a house in Brighton in the 1851 census who's principle family went by the name of Thorn. Not only that, but there is a Catherine Thorn of the right age to be the same Catherine Thorn who went on to marry a William Valler a year after the death of Elizabeth Valler in 1856.

Don't you just love genealogy....

Class: HO107; Piece: 1646; Folio: 431; Page: 9; GSU roll: 193551.

Could you just clarify for me Valda that you're suggesting James circa 1790 married someone called Hannah, then someone called Ann, then someone called Elizabeth?

If this was the case, do we know what happened to Ann?

The 1851 census gives a good reason for why James was marrying at St Thomas Cliffe

1851 census HO107 1643 folio 576
North Street Lewes St Thomas in The Cliffe  Sussex
Henry Valler 56  Dunsfold, Sussex, Head Married Cordwainer master
Sarah Valler 55  Dunsfold, Surrey,  Wife Married
Caroline Valler  26 Send, Surrey, Daughter

plus Catherine Ann Thorn's baptism which confirms the 1851 census entry you have found.

CATHERINE ANN THORN
Christening:  19 APR 1829   Saint Nicholas, Brighton, Sussex,
Father:  WILLIAM THORN
Mother:  ELIZABETH

Elizabeth Goble aged 32 the servant who was lodging with the Thorns in 1851 with her son Frederick aged 2?, (can't see a Frederick Goble birth registration circa 1848/9) stated she was married but that may have been for respectability.

GOBLE, Frederick William
Christening Date:2 Aug 1846   St Nicholas Brighton, Sussex
Mother:Elizabeth GOBLE

The marriage details from the 1851 marriage and William junior's birth certificate would confirm further information for Elizabeth. She may have had other children.

GOBLE, Sarah Ann
Christening Date:10 Mar 1833 St Nicholas Brighton, Sussex
Mother:Elizabeth GOBLE

GOBLE, Edwin
Christening Date:24 Dec 1848   St Nicholas Brighton, Sussex
Mother:Elizabeth GOBLE

You would need to check the burial records for Wisborough Green to see whether you have a burial of a Hannah Valler, followed by an Ann Valler.

You have a marriage of a James Valler in 1811 in Kirdford to Hannah Myles followed by baptisms in Kirdford and Wisborough Green to a James and Hannah (including William's on the same day as Darcey's in 1828 - the parish register may indicate whether this was a late baptism for William). You have a marriage of a James Valler, a widower, in Wisborough Green in 1827 to Ann Wood and the baptism of Darcey in 1828. Darcey is near or with his grandparents in Wisborough on the 1841 and 1851 censuses and when I can find him seems to be with the Wood(s) family on later censuses. He does not move to the Brighton area. If his mother died when he was young he may have been brought up by his maternal grandparents.
Importantly the baptisms in Wisborough and Kirdford would give the occupation of James Valler.

You have the marriage of a James Valler (no status given so unknown whether he was a bachelor or widower) to Elizabeth Wooldridge (probably a widow) in 1835. This man ties in with the 1841 and 1851 censuses and has a William Valler aged 15 with him in 1841 in the Brighton area. You know this man's occupation was a shoemaker from the censuses.

You would need to know that James Valler in Wisborough Green and Kirdford was also a shoemaker and that it was possible for him to remarry because between 1828 and 1835 Ann Valler had died and was buried (hopefully) in Wisborough.

Just one other point Valda...

What makes you think it's

JAMES VALLER
Christening:  27 DEC 1789   Dunsfold, Surrey
Father:  JOHN VALLER

as opposed to:

JAMES VALLER
Christening: 08 JUN 1788   Godalming, Surrey
Father:  WILLIAM  VALLER

You may have already answered this question but I've got information overload now and can't find the answer...

You also have at least one other sibling that confirms a move from Wisborough Green/Kirdford and brings an added bonus of shoemaking as an occupation (James was possibly in Spring Street Brighton on the 1841 census - James Vallard?).

1861 census RG9 598 folio 121
19 Crown Gardens Brighton  Sussex
James Valler  45  Kirdford, Sussex,  Head Widower Cordwainer
Ann Valler  17  Hove, Sussex,  Daughter Dressmaker
James Valler  15  Brighton, Sussex, Son

Kerry's previous post for the 1851 census

HO107 1647 folio 16
16 Cross Street Hove Sussex
James Valler, age 61, Cordwainer employing 1 man, born Dunsfield, Surrey
Elizabeth Valler, age 41, born Chichester, Sussex

Ages on the 1841 census for adults (those over 15) were usually rounded down to the nearest 5 so James' age is compatible with that given on the 1841 census - Elizabeth's is not

The marriage at St Thomas Cliffe in 1835 was where brother Henry, also born Dunsfold lived. He and his family were there on the 1841 census and 1851 census. Henry like his brother James was also a cordwainer (shoemaker).

Last post Kerry, 21:56:46 so a reasonable early night, though I must admit I seem to have spent most of the evening on the Sussex board - but where better to be - one of my favourite boards.
