Although this has changed, the attitude is still present among some military men.  My friend was surprised to find that her new GP had been a gynecologist in the army - his reply "Well, officers have wives who have babies, you know".  Presumably the wives of ordinary soldiers didn't need a gynecologist!

Yes, it helps us understand even more why there were so many children born out of wedlock, and why we frequently have difficulty finding them and their mothers in the records.

After my great-grandfather had served in Egypt and India, he was based in England and would not go overseas again.  It was then, when he was in his late thirties, and a Colour Sergeant, that he married.  Guess I know now why he waited.
