Digging up the dead and annoying the living...
|
I have recently discovered that a relative, John Milne 1850 - 1913 (the inventor of the seismograph) is buried in the churchyard of St Paul Barton Newport on the Isle of Wight. There is a photograph of it on the history page of their website at http://www.stpaulsbarton.co.uk/, but unfortunately it is not that clear as it is in the shadow of a tree or something.
I was wondering if some very kind person who is in the area would mind taking a photograph of this grave for me.
He married a Japanese lady, whose name I understand is Tone, and it is possible that she may be buried there as well.
I understand that he lived at Shide Hill House which apparently has become a block of flats now.
Thank you very much indeed, it is appreciated - John

Thanks Daisy,
That was great! I thought that I had 'googled' everything, but you have come up with a winner there
It looks like Tone was a geologist in her own right, quite outstanding for that age and country I think.
Thanks once again
John

I thought that I might take the liberty of asking again if some very kind person who is in the area would mind taking a photograph of this grave for me
Unfortunately I have no response to my request the first time round
Many thanks - John

Hi Scott,
No I have not been able to get a photograph yet, so your offer is very welcome.
I do not have the exact location, but I gather that he was a famous man in his time and that the grave is quite prominent and also well visited by the Japanese (he made his name in Japan and married a Japanese lady). Her name was Tone and I have found out since my original post that she went back to her family in Japan after John Milne died.
This is my web page about the man http://www.reffell.org.uk/twycross/earthquake.php
I do so hope that you can get a photograph some time.
Many thanks in advance - John
