could someone please do a 1871 lookup for Ellen Frail circa 1810 who is with her husband James circa 1792,I am trying to find birth places,
believe they are still in Portsea.

doing a family search for a friend in her seventies who wants to know about them.

James was born in Ireland and Ellen in Cornwall.

RG10/1138/27 p1 3 Timson? St

James Frail Head 78 Greenwich Pensioner b Ireland
Ellen Frail wife 59 b Cawsand Cornwall
Thomas Frail son 31 Steward RN b Portsmouth
Jane Frail son's wife 33 b Gosport
James H Frail son 26 Petty Officer RN b Portsmouth
James May grandson 18 Pupil Teacher RN b Portsmouth

James senior served in the Navy by the looks of it, June 1823 - 1844.

Do you have her in 1881 RG 11 piece 1153 folio 22 page 38? Think this is her - she is a widower and is a lodger in Portsea and gives her place of birth as Plymouth.

There is a death for an Ellen Frail, March quarter 1896 2B 289 which could be her.

could anyone please help me out,I have two Thomas Frail,(Freail,s) born about the same time,although one was born in Middlesex,the rest of the family seem to be in Hampshire,it gets really confuseing,so could someone please look for me for a Thomas Freail,Frail married to a Mary Ann born Guernsey,there is a John born Circa 1868 in Southsea,the two older children Thomas and William are listed as being born in Portsmouth in 1881 census but were actually born in Guernsey.
as the one I asked for has a wife Jane,it must be the wrong one.

Are you saying that the family Nell found in 1871 ( James born Ireland) isn't the right family?


Is this the Thomas you are looking for in 1891:

Thomas Freail 53  St Pancreas  Groom
Mary Ann Freail 52 Guernsey
Maud Freail dau 18  Aden    ( could this be Alderney?)
RG 12 piece 143 Folio 42 page 8 living in Islington

There is also a Chas Williams Freail born 1866 Aldersily (!) Channel Islands he is a soldier South Shoebury Essex, so could be another son.


In 1901 there are these two families:

William Freail abt 1868 Channel Islands, his wife Annie and 2 children living in St Pancreas ref
RG 13 piece 150 folio 70 page 31

Thomas J Freail abt 1865 Portsmouth and wife Harriet plus 2 children, living in Portsmouth ref
RG 13 piece 134 folio 90 page 58.

Hi Groom,
              yes this is the one,it is Aden and another one was born in Bombay,somehow the families are linked as are travelling in same area,s with same names,seem to be a seafareing family.
in 1881 census birth is listed thus, Red Sea (Asia Coly) Aden

there was a ship called Asia that the other Thomas Frail was on,wondered if this was it,I wish they had a law about useing same names,LOL

             like to congratulate you,you have the line perfectly,

Thomas=Mary Ann Stainer from guernsey,
Charles William =Elizabeth Creale Guernsy
William =Annie Lincoln
then William, I know the names of the two children,one was my friends father and the other one,just put her grandson in touch with my friend,they had never met,so the cousins are in contact for first time.
Thomas of course was Charles Brother married Harriet Watkins,
have been trying to go back further,know the link is there somewhere,will know more when i get Thomas and Mary Anns marriage cert.

thanks again am a bit further along now I know where Thomas was born.

Hi glad to have been of help. Slight correction Thomas's place of birth should be Hampstead Middlesex, not St Pancreas in the 1881. He was living in St Pancreas.


Have you seen the records in the IGI? There is an extracted record for
Thomas James Freail
christened 25 Dec 1864 at St Thomas, Portsmouth Hampshire
Father Thomas Freail, mother Mary Ann

There are also other extracted records for Freails including that of Maude May Freail born 5th Jan 1873 and christened 19th Jan 1873 Aden, Maharashra, India. Father Thomas James Freail and mother Mary Ann.

Also: Eleanor Mildred born 8 July 1874 christened 13th August 1874 Coloba-Bombay
         Maria Alice born 13th March 1871 christened 9th April 1871 Aden

This would be why we cant find them in the 1871 census - they were in India  Grin I wonder why?

I can't find a birth for Thomas 1838, but of course the age on the census could be slightly out and he could have been born before registration started in 1837.

Hi Jan,
           Thanks for that,will have a look,as Thomas and Mary Anns childrens names,include James and Eleanor,also William Charles and of couse Thomas , feel these must be strongly linked with James and Eleanor Harvey but luckily at least Thomas and Mary Ann married in England so their marriage cert should yeild a bit of information,we shall see.Eleanor and James Son,Charles William frail was on the Ship Baccante as a gunner with Prince Albert and HRH prince George on as midshipman.
