Yes, Jap I realise everyone must get to the point that they can go no further .... eventually.
Mary A - I understand what you're saying. I read many posts (just out of interest and to learn and to be nosey) and note that this kind of duplication is disliked.
I will get round to revisiting some of my old posts some time. Thanks to all for the feedback.

Thank you for the clarification.
I was referring to a post I did when I first came on the site in 2004 and then another I posted a couple of months ago, although I was actually asking from a different angle, ie original one for birth details, new one for census details it was referred to as a duplication.
However my feeling was that if you were still looking for an answer (in my case to both posts) surely a new one is ok. I should have probably put a link in to the original question.

Kerry That seems fine. And a link is great even if it only serves to show that no-one found anything last time (and might even remind some RootsChatters that they had tried last time without success)
My main hang-up about duplication is when it results in helpful RootsChatters wasting their time searching for, typing out, and posting, information which has already been provided - or is currently being provided - on another thread (or other threads)
All the very best,
JAP

Kerry, it sounds as though you were quite patient!
The official postition is that if we see multiple postings requesting the same info and made within days, hours, sometimes minutes of the original we will delete unanswered threads and/ or merge them, and tell the originator. We are especially tolerant of newbies who do this in all innocence, but our aim is to prevent the type of duplication of effort that has been described. The last thing we want is to "hack off " our regular looker-uppers who discover that the info has already been found.
If you have posted and not got a helpful reply after some time (at least a few weeks, to allow for those who don't visit very often but who have resources to help you) it is perfectly acceptable to post again.
If you need help to include alink to your original thread, please ask a Mod - we will be grateful that you are helping us out!
As I said earlier, if you can add new info to a thread there is more likelihood of its being answered.
Oh! and my personal bugbear is people who withold information as a "check" that the answer is "correct"!! If you know who the parents are (or whatever) pleeeeease share the info!
So the plan is:
Post
Wait
Wait some more
Post again with enhanced info and a link to the older thread
Remember to say thanks!
kind regards, Arranroots

Great advice Arranroots.
I also think that some people may duplicate in error.
Only the other day I posted a lookup query about someone I THOUGHT I'd asked about before. Prior to posting, I did "search rootschat" and found nothing, but I'm sure I've mentioned her before (perhaps as an aside in another post).
I think some people may sometimes forget that they've previously posted a similar request. I realise that the issue is not with these posters.

As the famous TV Meldrew (not the famous RC one) would say "I don't believe it!" or "Oh, in the name of sanity!"

Absolutely agree, that is daft, although I've seen something similar on a tree on the web!
I would never do that, even if I might forget some information I have asked for back 3 years ago! and incidentally I'm still looking for an answer!!!!

I agree, especially when it is done in a sneaky way, putting the husband's name on one site and the wife's on the other for instance. I got caught like that, I only saw one post and duplicated the info that had already been found. I had an acknowledgement and a request to look up something else for the same person. About a day later I had a "reminder" to do the lookup. I did this and have never seen anything from that RC since!
Guess who won't be getting my help in future if they do come back on the boards

I have a theory , that some "professional" researchers glean some information from the site for free !! You could be right there.

I've had suspicions about some RC'ers but always hope that I've been wrong, suspecting that they are just spreading their branches wide through in-laws etc. I prefer to think the best of people rather than the worst.
We all know that information is gained over time, but sometimes the main question remains unanswered - I have my own - grandmother's first husband - the Irish Francis Louis Longford who I've posted details for over a number of years and on a number of boards, and have slowly collected some history about him and his family but if anybody ever found a death for him between 1901 and 1907 I'd be overjoyed, so one day I may myself post another request for any information about him.

I have the popular Irish brick wall too.
My first ever post on rootschat was regarding them. I still haven't discovered any more but I do have a couple of small avenues to explore before I finally throw in the towel.
Has there been a "can someone find my unfindable people - I've been searching for years" thread?
