Farmaner of West Sussex
« on: Thursday 24 May 07 11:04 UTC (UK) »

Hi does anyone have a Mary Farmaner in their tree?

I am trying to link an Edward Osmond who married Mary Farmaner
on the 9th February, 1747 by licence at St Martins, Chichester.  She was a spinster of St Peters, Chichester. Edward was a Sergeant in Lord Cobhams Dragoons.  On the licence, he was given as Edmund

Any info would be great

There are 53 marriages for Farmaner and variants on the Sussex Marriage Index and many are around the Chichester area so Mary's parents may be there.  I was amazed at the variant spellings.   I see Edmund/Edward was a widower.   I assume you have searched on www.familysearch.org for her baptism?

Hi Andrea,
Yep did have a look on (Family search) I think a trip to West Sussex RO is in order, I have also sent a letter to a member of Sussex FHG who is researching the Farmaner name...

Also off to East Sussex RO in a week or so, so will see what records for West Sussex they hold.

Thanks again

Dave

HI Dave,
Wondering if you found out anything about the Edward Osmond/Mary Farmaner couple. Do you know if they had a daughter Maria?

Best, timpmama

Hi timpmama,

Firstly sorry for the "very" late reply new baby in the house has caused things to take a backseat

To answer your question, not that I know of, I believe Edward and Mary had

Jane born 1749 Chichester West Sussex
Edward born 1752 Chichester West Sussex  (My Line)
Richard born 1754  Chichester West Sussex
William born 1756 Chichester West Sussex

I hope this helps?

Hi Dave,

Yes, it does help. My Maria is possibly a granddaughter of Edward and Mary; you gave me two more sons to trace.

So thanks!

So who were Maria's parents? What dates and where in Sussex?

Hi,

My Maria Osmond m. William Allen 1812 at St. Peter the Great, Chichester, Sussex.  He was born 1779 also SPTG Chichester, but I have not been able to find a baptism record for her.  From the census, I calculate that Maria was born between 1781 and 1791.

So I have been looking at other Osmonds/Osmans etc in Chichester and trying to trace descendants.

Thanks for your interest. Do you have any information that would help?

There is a marriage licence for the couple issued 19 Jun 1812

William Allen [bach cordwr S.Peter Gt.] m Mary Osmond [sp 21 otsp]

Sponsors ss:W.A. John Feast breeches maker Chich.

This puts her dob at around 1791, don't know if the licence means she was not from Chichester?

Hi Sean,

That's great - I didn't know there was a license. Gives me a better idea of her age.

I think "otsp" means "of the same parish,"  so this means she was at least living in Chichester at the time of the marriage.

Thanks!
