hi my father was lindsay soutter his walter soutter and his joseph soutter all from australia. Now i think the scotish link is john soutter from angus born 1800s his wife was catherine low born 1806 do not have any other info can someone out ther help me please sanz australia
Do you have any death or marriage certificates for your Soutters?
You need to work backwards till you find which was the first Soutter to come to Australia. The Australian death certifcates are usually very good and may even tell you which part of Scotland (if they came from there) they were born in and their parent's names (plus more).
I agree with the - work backwards - most Australian Certificates have very useful information - Vic, NSW & Qld in particular. The certificate for the first Soutter to marry in Australia would also be useful, as this information is given by the person, rather than an informant (assuming the marriage was after civil registration).
There are a number of children born to this couple in Scotland 1825 - 1834, including a Walter - but I don't see a Joseph. Did this family come to Australia and was Joseph born here? Do you have their immigration information?
Sanz, how do you know there is a relationship between the John b Angus and your Soutters born in Australia?
Trish, I thought if Sanz got the death cert of the first Soutter she thinks arrived in Australia (Joseph?) it may tell her how long the person had been in the State (or Australia) to give some clue on years to look for an arrival and perhaps other family members travelling with him.
Sanz, do you have any idea which state your Soutters arrived in, were born in or died in? As Trish says you'll probably get some good information from the certificates.
PS Are you related to John Soutter, the TV weather guy? Added later: Just goes to show how observant I am - it's John Schluter - he's on channel 7
