Looking for pre-1806 Gawcott records
« on: Sunday 27 May 07 08:29 BST (UK) »

Hi

My 5x-great-grandfather has built a considerable brick wall around his origin. I know he was a farmer on the Hillesden Estate who died in 1744 in Preston Bissett. Other family members and I have been searching for his birth date/place without success.

The Bishop's Transcript of his first son's baptism in Radclive/Radcliffe 1736 reads:
Wm son of John and Anne Stolworthy of Gawcott was baptised Dec 27 born Nov 29

(This is the only time their name was written as Stolworthy. From then on it is written as Stalworthy, later Stallworthy. There are lots of Stolworthys in Norfolk. The Hillesden Estate (comprised of Gawcott, Preston Bissett, Cowley, Hillesden) at that time belonged to the Chamberlayne-Denton family, one of whom married Wenman Roberts/Coke of Holkham Hall, Norfolk. It's tempting to speculate that John Stolworthy/Stallworthy had been sent from Norfolk to Buckinghamshire to work on the estate.)

I've read that Gawcott was a chapelry of the Parish of Buckingham, not that I really understand what that means. If John and Anne were married in Gawcott in say, 1735, on which parish register would their marriage have been recorded? Does anyone have access to marriages for the Church of St Peter & St Paul, Buckingham?

Cheers
